hello
need help

looking at buying a freelander with ird failure, problem is its 130 miles from home.
the seller says it drives ok below 60 mph then you get a knocking sound.

i have a good ird so the question is will it be ok to drive it back???? or will it be ok to remove the prop whilst i'm there and drive it back then (propless)?
dont want to pay the expensive recovery costs

cheers dean

wasn't looking at fitting the ird there, just needed to know if its ok to drive it back with failed ird if removed the prop.

just looked at some of the mondo treads one was 14 pages long lol cant read that much.

i think from what i did read its ok to drive it.

drive it back ,if it lets yer down jist phone rac or aa or wotever recovery yer got ,if not get some. . . . .less yer like fixin fings ont the road [fink not]. . . .

Just remove the prop and strap it to the roof rack, Its a bit big to fit inside the hippo, it will fit but your seats will look a right mess afterwards. Plenty of sheets to keep the crud off

i do have a recovery truck but it will take it over the 3.5 limit so thought it would be easier to drive it back if it dont cause anymore damage.

not in any recovery dont like spending money lol

ok great so its sockets, spanners, straps or bedsheets, her in doors will be pleased:D

so with buggered ird its still ok to drive?

Yeah torx sockets two sizes, E10, E12, plus 10mm, 15mm, 17mm hex nuts. Use open ended spanners for the rear 17mm nuts, not a lot of space between the flange and the nut

At least two wheels on one side should be off the ground, allows you to rotate the prop and access each nut in turn.

Depends on what part of the IRD is worn, if its just the pinion cog (That drives flange bolted to prop) then it could be a smooth drive home in Mondo mode.

If the main cogs driving the front driveshafts are damaged, could be a rough ride, how does the owner know for sure its the IRD???

he says he took it to a LR garage. he said it drives ok but knocks above 60mph, all ok in reverse. he just had it moted and taxed for 6 months £1000 on a R plate 120,000 miles. what you think???

he said it would be ok to drive it home as is as long as stayed below 60 but dont fancy it lol

Just take it easy,I changed my IRD after checking fluid level and finding teeth off one of the internal gears, and it had still got the old BLACK coloured fluid in that should have been changed to new synthetic fluid ages ago,but it still drove ok with no problems noisewise.
Best of Luck, it might be an idea to take drain plug out before you drive it
back & see what turns up,its magnetic & catches all the crap, if you can get hold of some new fluid it might be worth it, you need a good Hex socket to get filler plug out which can be a swine, ( tight )

that might be a wise move before heading home, will take some down with me

sparky john forgot to mention to fill it back up before you drive home.

On a more serious note, make sure you can undo the filler plug before you undo the drain plug. otherwise you could end up with a dry ird, and no way of getting fluid back into it.

Bandit 600 - Torx sizes E10,E12, correction on the hex nut sizes, 10mm, 15mm at the front and 17mm at the rear.

If you can get the 19mm level plug undone first then perhaps change the IRD oil, otherwise I would just leave the IRD oil for the sake of 130miles.

Im not sure about the 60mph thing, I take it this was with the prop on? Could have been VCU on its way out????

The gear ratio difference in the early FL was 0.8%, I have asked this before but no answer...........If the difference is 0.8%, then thats 1 in 120, so for every 360 degree rotation of the prop does it slip 3 degrees?

We know that the worst offenders of prop and IRD damage was from our American counterparts that bombed up and down the freeway, the faster the speed, the more rotations of the prop and subsequent slippage....... you can guess the rest.

bandit 6oo,,, you havent mentioned what engine its got, a £1000 petrol engined one might not be such a good bargin ?

a grand sounds good to me, so what if they come down further.

In 2001 the FL1 was the best in its class for holding very high second hand value. Something like 75% of the original RRP

If the prices drop more and more then all the more k-series for me to tune
