mate said his 200tdi starter was £80 odd from bedford batteries, had to exchange the old unit tho.

Can't you get a new solenoid kit for it? I know they do one for the 300 starter for £30odd ish

I'd do the earths first, you can check if your starters iffy with a set of jump leads & a battery, easier off the vehicle, put the - on the earth touch the + to the live side of the starter and see if it spins up, if it does it's a duff earth if it clicks starter is kaput.

Good point---gonna wait until i get a recon in my hand. if i can salvage the old one, i'll return the recon. if not, i'll install the old one. the 125gbp included a 50gbp core charge, so i figure a new one with piece of mind for 75gbp is worth it, don't you?

Clean the exiter wire, they get very crapped up under there.

I love this.

You need to find out what exactly has failed before swapping parts.

Put a decent jump lead from battery negative to ali part of the engine out of harms way that will isolate all earths and illiminate that. Also before you do anything make sure the battery is charged fully. Check there is not a huge short usually the alternator main wire and or main supply wire from battery it can wear through over the bellhousing and takes out some of the ignition wiring aswell.

Find a fault before spending £££

Spent the afternoon under the hood---got all the wires off the starter, cleaned them, steam cleaned the posts on the starter and rewired. The only earth lead was from the battery to the frame---didn't see an earth lead from the starter at all.

Anyways, after all cleaning and rewiring....keyed it and *CLICK*. Tried to jumpstart to off my other car....*CLICK*.

Going to lean forward and get a new starter....found a reman for 72GBP....

starter doesnt need an earth itself it is earthed through been bolted to engine which is bolted to transmission but you must have earth between body ,chassis and engine/transmission all 3 must be earthed together then to battery

Your not having much luck!!

Starter motor if you have done all the checks suggested get the starter refurbished or new

Been trying to find these earths on my 90.
Found the one to the Transmission, and think Ive found one to the chassis.
The one from battery goes to side of Transmission but stops there, should it carry one to somwhere else? and at what piont do all 3 join together? , as the ones Ive found on mine are just one single earth each stopping at the point where they are earthed to vehicle???

usually on a defender it goes from neg battery to chassis then to transmission ,body is separtely earthed to chassis
There is only one thick earth wire going straight from battery neg to transmission, then no where else, just stops there.
I have found another thinner one attached to chassis, just assume its an earth, but can not see where the other end leads to.
Have not found any attached to the body yet.

it doesnt matter were the earth connection is as long as body and chassis and transmission are earthed to each other and so to battery , battery to transmission needs to be the best earth as this takes starter current

Got her up and running----yep----it was the starter. Got the new one in and runs like a top.

Now....what to do with the old starter? Rebuild and keep? Rebuild and sell? Trash?
