Evening All, New to the forum..

I've recently given a new home to a tidy 1997 P38 4.6HSE.

When I bought the old girl the owner said it had a fault with the right indicator, suspecting it was the stalk he duly supplied a replacement, the price was right so I bought her anyway.

I replaced the stalk and the right indicator still won't engage, the left is fine, the hazards work fine, all bulbs are in good condition and the stalk terminal - both original and replacement look mint.

Hoping this is something simple, bottom is twitching like a rabbits nose at the thought it could be the dreaded BECM. :)

Your collective thoughts will be much appreciated!

Cheers

Ade

Do you have a copy of RAVE? It has all the wiring diagrams and should help with the troubleshooting. You should be able to measure if the indicator stalk is sending a signal to the becm. You should be able to confirm the test by checking the working indicator.
Other possible fault is the reluctor ring on the steering wheel.

The stalks do not go through the rotary coupler, but wiring breaks have neen known. You need to check at the BECM with a meter to see if the command is being received. Also check if the carpet is wet as that can cause corrosion problems and moisture inside the BECM.
When you say "right indicator" do you mean front, rear and side indicators are not working?

When I engage the right indicator I don't get the luxurious plip/plop sound effect and the lights don't flash (back, front or dash) left works fine, hazards work fine.

I will check all of the things you have suggested, I'm a novice when it comes to car electrics (don't even own a multimeter) but Land Rovers bring out the dormant skill sets in folk so I'll roll the sleeves up and get stuck in!

If the hazards work, that clears the power and out put side of the BECM.
The fault must therefore lie between the stalk and the BECM as the stalk supply must be OK since the LH indicators work. It could also just possibly be the BECM input circuit from the stalk.
If you have the EKA code and radio code etc, it might be worth disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. The BECM has been known to get confused and forcing a re-set might just clear the problem:)

Datatek...Thanks for the response.

The radio is a non standard Kenwood DVD device, so no worries there. Ive looked through all my paperwork and the manual and can't find any EKA code.

Q. What do I need the EKA code for?
Q. If I don't have it and reset the system - what are the risks?

Cheers

It is the Emergency Key Access code

You get locked out of your car

You get it from a main dealer. You could try phoning with your VIN number but most of them prefer you to turn up in person with V5 and some other form of identification.

Hi

i am having a similar problem with my recently purchased p38 i can be driving along and go to indicate and sometimes they work sometimes they dont seems a bit odd.

is there anything i can try to fix this?

Provided the doors are unlocked and the ignition is off you shouldent need the eka after a battery disconect
But its worth getting and learning how to input it cos the chances are you will need it one day

That said on a slight different note the other week my battery was dieing (not being run for a while due to timing belt) and I got "key code lockout" I put jump leads on and turned the key to put the dash lights on and it cleared?
Confused:confused::confused::confused:
