Hi All,

Sorry for a long post but thought I'd seek the collective views of the forum.

Jan 2014 freelander 1 TD4 manual 3 door hard top.

I recently had my ac recharged after it not having been charged for about a year or so. My mechanic said all was well with the vacuum checks and filled it with the appropriate amount of oil and refrigerant etc.

All was well and it worked fine for about one week when I noticed that it appeared to stop cooling completely.

Before I enter into an expensive series of pressure tests, refilling etc. I thought I'd carry out some tests.

1) ac clutch doesn't engage when ventilation fan on position 1 and or on screen setting position and or ac switch
2) ac switch light comes on when pressed
3) I have fully tested the relay and it is fully functioning. It switches and passes 12v to the output terminal when demanded by the blower switch and ac switch.
4) there is continuity between the ac relay output terminal and the common earth so the ac coil circuit should be complete
5) resistance between ac relay output and common earth shows 3.5ohm at 12 degrees C which is about right
6) ac clutch drive belt is old and cracked but not slipping but would indicate original belt and ac pump and clutch.

I'm aware of the refrigerant low pressure cut out, the condenser freezing safety cut out and the tri-state switch, but am i correct in thinking that if any of these sensors were active it would stop the ecm from sending the voltage to the relay?

I'm receiving 12v from the relay output so suspecting that the ac clutch has failed mechanically somehow.

Can any one throw any more light on this for me before I venture further. Thank for bearing with my post.

Op probably means 2004 as no hard top FL 2 !!

If the pressure is low then the pressure switch will inhibit the compressor running with no or low gas.
If there is a feed to the lead on the compressor when AC is switched on then you are right about the electro magnetic clutch failing. This can be bearing, coil has gone open circuit or bad ground, the latter is unlikely as it is bolted to the engine.Coil can be tested with ohmmeter.

Sorry it was a typo year of model is 2004
My thought is that even if the low pressure switch was activated then surely this would prevent the 12v supply to the relay which according to the rave manual is the only source of power to the ac clutch after all the sensors and ecm.

I will take the bumper off and run the tests again at the ac pump and clutch.

Thanks for the help
