Heating Oil - Anyone tried this?

My wallet is also a bit healthier so will continue to run 50/50 until further notice or until I cant get any heating oil. I've got an MOT coming up shortly so will see what the emissions are like. My mate will just do the emissions bit before my MOT so I can see if any problems. Fingers crossed.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and haven't posted anything yet. I'd be interested to know about MOT emissions and running on veg oil. I've got a 200tdi and i'm on my second tank of a 50/50 mix with veg oil. It smokes a bit more on start-up and whilst it's warming up but after that seems ok. Will this extra smoke put a big X in the wrong box?! I'll probably just run it on straight diesel before my next test to be safe.

Any opinions about on this as I'm not an expert! Cheers

i know it's legal..but do the fuzzy fooker's who stop and dip know this :)

i had a copper tell me he could smell burning oil during a random stop check, this led him to calling out the roadside testing facility..who did pass me motor and let me on me way..

but this led to me being considerably late to a meeting and the inconvienience of standing there roadside looking like a common crim(or pikey :D)..

which to me isent worth the couple of pence difference from reguler derv(local asda is 1.30.9 derv and 1.21 a liter for veg :(

if it was still 79ppl then yeh but not fer 9ppl saving it's not  :(

dont worry about it - putting a few litres of veg oil in yer tank is a known method of reducing your emmisions - people have been known to add it just so they can pass the test

might be worth having a print out of the HMRCE statement with you that shows it's tax free with a 2K5l usage allowance - even if there wasnt any difference in the price i'd still use veg oil if only because all of the 200/300s we run are much quieter and have more "urge" when running on it - the smell is just a bonus

good idea sean ;)

and yup got to admit i miss me fresh cooked chips smell :(

oh and me engine running quieter...cos you have to have radio on at least 6 or 8 just to hear it over the ferker  :D

talking of radio's(and doing the useual lz offtopic move:) ) was in me mate's car the other day and he had his radio on 22 an his car may as well not have an engin its that quite, what the ferk i said is yer deaf and his reply was ya need yer choones while driving ..

there's having choones playing and having a wembly stadium concert goin on in yer car was my reply..to which he called me old and chuckled..

is it true am getting old:rolleyes:  :(

As soon as you start turning the radio down instead of up, and thinking to yourself that the youths of today will end up deff,,because they spend more on their stereo's, than what there motors worth,
Then yes you are getting old.
Back on topic though, if your not lucky enough to have a supply of used veg
oil then wont the cash n carry wonder why your buyin 50+ltrs every other week? or wont they give a toss as long as they get there money?
And the price of the stuff is starting to get stupid now as well
But i didnt know that stickin a ltr or so could help out on the emmisions part
of an mot :) so cheers for that Sean ;)

i do'nt know about heating oil ,but i am using bio in my 2001/90/td5 and i will
be from now on (as i said before stuff the fuel giants) i keep getting a mixed reaction from people but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do it!!! when you say veg oil ?? i'm not sure as bio is a mix and does contain veg oil but its gone through that process which breaks down the molecular structure(hark at me) to make it the same viscosity as diesel. if in doubt look
at Land Rover Owner :: Index and type in bio diesel as i did and read on its very anal
but hey thats how we learn . My td5 has been fine and matey who supplies mine runs his disco td5 on it and has done for 3-4 years just change the fuel
filter after the first couple of tanks. all the best

Are you sure it 28 sec oil cos thats basically kerosene heating also uses 32 sec oil with is red diesel of course neither would please customs and excise but the landy wouldnt notice 32 sec if you are running 28 sec it wouljd be happier mixed 50:50 with cooking oil would be about the same as diesel then

so folks will a 2.5td engine benefit from some veg oil in. how much, ratio etc. will it make her less clacky.

ta betty x

it will love you for it betty

i ran a TD for well over 10k with it and it just purred

70% veg is fine this weather - it'll cough a bit for the first few minutes

The plate attached to the tank says 28 sec (and the old boiler was also plated 28 sec) so that is what I've assumed is in the tank.
I've mixed it 50/50 with regular diesel and so far I have not seen any problems performance wise.
It smells a bit like parafin but not as strong. The exhaust doesn't smell any different to normal. Not that I make a habit of smelling my exhaust. ;)
I'm going to keep using it until its all gone and then think about what I'll do for the future. I'll look into 32 sec oil and see how easy (or costly) it would be to get the tank refilled.
I've still not seen a definitive answer regarding veg oil and the TD5. Is anyone doing this without any problems?

I've been stopped THREE TIMES in last month - if you're rural theyy're stopping you all the time up here in Scotlandland. I also know someone who was stopped and was given a written warning for having his copy of The Sun on his dashboard (allegedly blocking his view - of what, his bonnet?) He then had to remove it and was issued with ANOTHER bit of paper saying he'd removed it.

I ALSO know of someone who RAN his td5 on veg oil for 30,000 miles and the entire engine was knackered as it filled up with jelly. Engine oil became jelly and all the pipes filled up with kak, then engine overheated and died.
