Hello,

Getting a xenon kit soon for my TD4,

only for the low beams as i know the td4 has two seperate lamps for high and low beams.

please can someone tell me what type of lamp the low beam is ?

i understand its only a single filament lamp with two pins on the lamp, but what type is it ?

i believe its a H7 type ? but theres loads available ?

just need to know so i get the correct xenon kit.

Many Thanks
:D

One has to ask why? If yu want brighter lights - just go for Halfords 477EB bulbs - £24 for a pair and 90% more light. Bloody brill on my disco and X-T.

had a xenon kit on my old freebie and since getting my new sport with the standard lamps you just cant beat xenons !

once uv tried them u never want to go back to old halogens.

a much better light, more usefull, less power drain, last longer etc..

£24 for halfords lamps or another £50 for proper xenon, why not :D

u wont believe me untill you try them for yourself.

one of the best extras you can fit to your freelanders. :D:D:D

according to Ring automotive its only 07 on i.e. FL2 that gets separate bulbs for dip and main (both being H7) before that all they list is H4

Mines an '06 TD4 Facelift (not FL2) and both dip and main beams are H7.

I was getting seriously confused with all these bulb websites that said I had H4 (dual dip & main).

Only reason I know is 'cos my dip bulb blew this morning, blowing the fuse and taking out all my dash lights!!

New fuse and new H7 and all is well in the world!!! - for the moment :D

yea i had the same problem on that website.

lucky i managed to confirm the right ones.

xenons all ordered now, cant wait to get them on, all these dark, horrible nights now. PERFECT !

Which ones are you getting?

Post a pic of before and after....need to see the difference before getting a set myself.

Thx.

ok mate, will do.

take a pic before and after.

im getting a kit off ebay from the same seller that i got my kit for my last freelander last year.

these just simply plug inline with your lamps.

shouldnt take more than 10 mins to fit both units.

should be recieving them soon so ile post the install process and piccys.

Thanks :D

I've got a 04 HSE and separate bulbs for main and dipped beams too!

It's all very well being brighter, just be sure not to blind the poor fooker heading towards you!!! Dont forget to use the headlamp adjust motors when loaded in the back.

Oh and cleaning the headlamp lens goes a long way to seeing further too. Use the area not wiped by windscreen blades as a guide to how filthy yr lamps are.

Overhere it is necessary (and all new cars equipped with it) to have an automatic levelling device when you put xenon bulbs. As for my MY01 I think it is just one lamp with two filaments, no ?

over here it's illegal to supply or fit aftermarket hid headlamp kits as they arn't type approved and can't get type approval. mot are clamping down on this one and 2 of the mates have had to rip em out and go back to standard bulbs.

Aftermarket HID (Xenon) headlamps
Fact sheet: Aftermarket HID headlamps
December 2006

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "HID is banned in the after market" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require HID in the after market to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

In the Department's view.....

Does this mean that the DfT are saying aftermarkets are illegal or not? They're not exaclt being explicit are they.....

The AA / RAC may (just to prove a point) think they are perfectly ok, so in their view - aftermarkets are ok! - who's right and who's wrong?? If anyone!!!

Have to admit to getting to be a Grumpy Old Man with some of these new headlights even on the new cars. A lot of them are far too bright for oncoming traffic!!! :(

indeed i know there illegal !

but if correctly adjusted there not a problem for other drivers.

And when it comes to MOT time, just plug the old lamps back in :D

2 second job !

Simples

Loads of cars have these type of lights fitted now so its hard for police etc.. to determin which cars have them factory standard or not.

never been pulled in the year and a half of using mine :D
