ok - time to gear up for the winter - what are the weapons of choice when it comes to headlamp and driving lamp bulbs ?

got a 2001 DII TD5 - standard pre-face lift lights and safari 5000 driving lamps, standard wiring loom with the S5000's on the high beam circuit - currently got the original bulbs in the S5000's and some halfords (cough) "extreme brilliance" things in the mains - they're not bad on full beam, but in dipped mode or on "side light" setting they really are little more than a pathetic, yellowy glow

anyone recommend anything else worth having - quality bulbs or relatively cheap mods/upgrades, maybe ?

lots of driving on unlit country lanes and B-roads, so some decent illumination is important - thanks for any input !

I have 'extreme brilliance' bulbs fitted also, and they are brilliant either on high or dipped beam with a good spread of light on dipped. My side lights are LEDs which give the usual LED type of blueish white light and fill the whole lamp with light.

Unfortunatly your the headlamp patten is all wrong for HID as the are not deigned for them, also the headlamps must be self-leveling, unless you have self-levelling suspension.

Aftermarket HID (Xenon) headlamps

The pattern on mine is absolutely perfect. As far as self-levelling is concerned, my Nissan X-Trail with factory HID's used me with a 10mm socket to adjust the level. On my Disco the headlamp level works very well. '0' when solo and '3' when towing.

I do recommend washers for the headlamps as HID's need clean lenses to avoid refraction problems.

On later Disco's with the H7 bulb and a normal lamp unit (as opposed to projector type) then a H7R bulb should be used to avoid glare.

Again the headlamps are not designed for HID the beam patten will not be correct, therefore not permitted as stated in summary paragraph in the link above.

I know what it says, but to say that a new vehicle does not need self-levelling (because of EU Type Approval) and then to say a retro fitted kit needs it is a bit daft.
