head gasket

please please please may some one help me, iv got a 19j in a series, and it runs like a dog, other than piston rings which are knackered, it wants a head gasket, can some one right up some instructions for replacing head gasket as iv searched and cant find any !, any one in leicestershire fancy giving a nooby a hand ?

fit a 200-300tdi as it sounds like it is not worth repairing

Time for a 200,lots of info of how to do it in this site.

yes yes i know, but i havent saved for the 200 and just spent 600 getting the dam thing on the road ! if i can do head gasket in a weekend at £13 + a free skim then im sorted for another day or two

A rough guide, you have to remove the turbo and inlet manifold think the heater hoses (not sure) water pump. rocker cover, rocker gear and push rods and unbolt the head.
It has to be lifted straight up as i it has locating dowels.

Worth checking when its off for wear on the tappet sliders as these are bronze they wear away and can cos ****ty running.

Most times you can get away without skimming the head but if your unsure if its been cooked or not get it skimed its about £50, You will probably find the swirel chambers are loose in the head giving it a rattely noise no doubt they will be cracked to, think there about £15 each for new ones.

Cost is mounting up.....


I would change to a 300 or a 200 tdi full engine rad etc around for less than £600

you dont need to remove water pump ,head is cast and do suffer with cracking between valves ,hot spots should be loose but are worth changing if cracked they should protrude about 2 thou as head gasket holds them in place

4 months and one 200tdi conversion late

and hes still having f*cking problems with that lump aswell !
