got it back together today had to reset the valve clearances bit of a panick on that but watched trailer fitter on you tube and learnt the RULE OF NINE easy to pick up and soon had it sorted finished putting it back together took the battery of charge put it back in bit worried about air in fuel lines ,new oil and filter turned the key warmed the glow plugs and it started straight away.runs fine no chuffing and sounds really good. but now shes got a blue tinge to the exhaust smoke . so its new pistons rings and big end shells when i got some more cash wont be long .is it posible to get the pistons out through the bottom of the engine with the crank inplace or would it be better to whip the head of again so i can deglaze the bores .now ive done it once it should be easy to do it again.

no pistons have to come out of the top ,if bore has wear on thrust side (lhs)i would bother and if you do do it do it well scratching the surface is pointless and rings need gapping in each bore before fitting on the piston and filing to size if necessary

sounds tricky might be to much for me at the moment maybe wait till ive got enough money to get it done by somebody with more exspertise.or buy a 200tdi and get the block rebuilt.but thinking about it i would like to do the 19j myself

no thats it in for penny im going to take the head of again and try to deglaze the bores new pistons rings shells will take a couple of weeks to get the money together.hope to pass mot in the meantime mightbe lucky and scrape through emisions if my head repair lasts that is fingers crossed.searching for threads on piston ring gapping and filing

been out road testing gently all seems fine .ive left the breather hose that connects to the air intake off but there is air comming out of the hose connection not smoke is this normal it must be comming back from the turbo not sure wot this means reading threads sounds like some crankase pressure is normal can anybody tell me if it is normal or do i need to investigate turbo function for any problems

very normal its oil and excessive smoke in it that arent ,it normally gets rebreathed back into engine for emission reasons

Good move to get the breather out of the intake;)
A bit of crankcase pressure is normal, even a new engine has a bit especially when its warming up. So long as ther isnt smoke pouring out and spitting oil it is fine try and route it into chassis or something useful.
My perkins engined tractor has a steady stream of smoke from the breather and is used every day no problems, the trouble is when the thick fumes and oil go in the intake and the engine starts to burn the oil:eek:

thank you turboman the wastegate actuator seems very stiff and there does not seem tb any movement when engine is reved should i be seeing some movement or is there a problem with the actuator

It has to be fairly stiff or you wont get any boost.Movement is fairly slight and you would have to rev it a lot best not with no load you might blow it up.
You can get the boost pressure checked at a diesel specialist but if power is OK it is probably boosting. What is really important with these is to keep an eyeon the turbo bearings to make sure it doesnt get oil to burn through the turbo either. If thr turbo bearings are AOK and your oil level stays below high you will be fine.:)

you can rev the engine a lot higher thans needed to start opening waste gate ,id imagine the rods been shortened to increase the boost ,if you have an airline and darent rev the engine remove pipe to actuator and give it a quick pulse of air bearing in mind its designed to take 20psi ish not 100

thanks again turboman i might try a boost gauge just read the haynes book again an it shows how to fit a gauge between turbo and actuator this should tell me one way or another it says to test when driving up a hill with full throttle maintained .that would exsplaine why im not seeing any movement with no load on the engine

Try wot james said with the airline but be careful ya dont bust the actuator.

it works off psi ,which is related to engine revs not load ,load reduces revs which reduces turbo output

hello all looking for tips on changing my head gasket im not a mechanic but will give it a go xmas has made me low on funds so a garage is off but need my 110 for work .got the new gasket and sealer but looking at the haynes book it teels me to remove everything sounds a bit tricky is this something i should try or leave it till i can pay someone . its chuffing out the rocker cover but the AA chap reckons he had this on his and the head gasket had blown through to the oil ways no water in sump runs ok read lots of the threads but everyone says buy 200tdi bin the 19j not an option no work no money head gasket could save my old 110

Paul I have a 19j in my 110 1988 runs fine could do with 1 injector as it has a little miss fire I put it in around 6 month ago with new timing belt head gasket crank seal etc but I now have a 200tdi to fit we're about in the uk are you I could stick it on a pallet for you depending we're you are in the uk for 225£

thanks for the offer bud but im now halfway through this engine rebuld and im slowly working through remaining problems and its a good learning process for me im hopeing to tackle pistons /rings and bottom of the engine next when funds allow

just fitted another head gasket getting good at it now and it dont take long now. still the original block 177000 miles and jus keeps going strong old motor really just needs a good fidle and little money now and then. love it

These engines are underrated if you ask me. Cheap and easy to work on, reasonable power and will plod on all day as long as you look after them properly. I'm certainly not going to swap mine for some unknown tdi on a pallet any time soon :)
