hello all looking for tips on changing my head gasket im not a mechanic but will give it a go xmas has made me low on funds so a garage is off but need my 110 for work .got the new gasket and sealer but looking at the haynes book it teels me to remove everything sounds a bit tricky is this something i should try or leave it till i can pay someone . its chuffing out the rocker cover but the AA chap reckons he had this on his and the head gasket had blown through to the oil ways no water in sump runs ok read lots of the threads but everyone says buy 200tdi bin the 19j not an option no work no money head gasket could save my old 110

Is it loosing oil / water ? Chuffing out of the cap suggests possible piston ring failure don't use sealant just gasket on its own if you do change it

it starts fine but it chuffs out the top of rockercover allot and from dip stick when i checked today there was thin black oily liquid driping from air fillter seems very thin not like oil but more like diesel but very black dipstick still reads full no change at all

it drives ok but smokes bad from breather pipe which i have removed from air filter cab fills with white smoke

It's either a break between the oil gusset and a cylinder or piston rings but on the gusset side it could only be on the return side. And I'm not sure where the oil runs back on the 19j James Martin will know

Oil in air filter is probably from engine breathers, best to route them out of air intake if you can,and get a clean air filter if it is dripping oil.
Your problem is as likely to be rings,valves/guides, or crankcase pressure as HG, could be gasket tho

I can't personally see it being the gusset though as I don't think there is enough space inside for a sufficient ammount of air to cause it to chuff hence me thinking rings. Doesn't hurt to take the head off though

thank you for youre help bud im going to do the head gasket tomorow if it stops raining maybe get a tarp over the top work under that

push rod tubes into cam gallery down to the sump ,td can suffer from split piston crowns as well as worn bores ,but could easy be a well blown head gasket ,heads need careful checking as the crack between the valves commonly

See told you Martin would know ;) I thought it might go through the followers which would create sufficient air flow for chuffing anyway yeah get the head off !

if i remove the head and gasket is not blown what would you suggest my next action. are cracks visible to the eye and will valves rattle around if guides are worn. piston cracks would probably mean the end of my engine as rebuild might be to exspensive .

real question is wheather it is bad enough to stop driving. While it would be proper practice to remove head and investigate, can you afford the answer at the moment?. If its still driving then perhaps you should keep driving and start saving for 200tdi or engine rebuild.
