i was under the impression that if it didnt work it would just stall

Some one with better knowledge needed here. but HDC is a function of the TC and ABS and on very few occasions I used it, it worked fine but you new it was working! just trying to help you figure if it is working at all.

hello being out today tried several hills all of diff steepness and the hill decent must be working as it doesnt just stall but no light on dash

i have looked on the rave CD and it says what wire the bulb is (pin17)

so i put a temp 12v to that wire to try and make the bulb come on and nothing... put my test light to the wire tho and it has power even when disconnected from the abs ecu it still has some power in the wire and no bulb

bulb does come on when ignition turned on tho

This is not how hdc works. You will never stall going down hill. The hdc applies braking to individual wheels to prevent the vehicle tavelling too fast down hil. The process is like abs but in reverse. Also it doesnt work going up hill bcause its called hil DESCENT control. However if you fail the hill and reverse back down it'll work. Engine braking will also control the speed of descent but wont if the wheels slip. This is where hdc comes in. When it kicks in it'll be noisy. Like abs is. Itll also muller ya disks in pretty quick time. But you wont crash and die which is a bonus.

Nice one. Be warned you will be able to descend hills you mght not be able to drive back up. And the pads n discs get a kicking too.

HDC works by abs pulse braking the car if it goes above a certain speed. Put yer Freelander in 1st gear and drive down a hill at 10mph then take yer foot off all pedals. If HDC is on and able to work you will feel the car slow down by using the abs and not just slowing because it's in gear still. If not, then avoid hitting whats in front of you. An eggsample of hdc working on mine:

hello again after some more digging (working in the rain)

i have followed the Rave wiring diagram to find the white wire with pink stripe is from the abs ecu to the cluster

if i turn the igition on only and nothing more this wire becomes live i dnt have a multi meter just a test light at the moment but has a week power bulb on (test light lit slightly)

but auto data tells me a different wires is to the bulb but that has no power either when the HDC is switched on

does this mean a bad earth could be my problem as as the white/pink wire has power when disconnected from the abs ecu

after some more work i have removed the instrument cluster to find TC and the orange HDC light are missing so i took 2 bulbs from others and those to lights stayed one but no other light

are the black boxes under the drivers seat a common fault for the TC amber HDC light being on or what about maybe a sensor on the gearbox

hello update

my new ABS ECU arrived today and still the lights have not gone out there is still no fault codes and yet the HDC amber and TC lights are still illuminated

hello today my switch arrived for the gearbox (had a wire handing in engine bay turns out the switch in gearbox was missing...

fitted switch today and the lights are still on TC/HDC

do i need to use diagnostic machine to turn the lights off or will they go off on there own

Actually no idea but a search for "the three amigo's" might help ;)

(Apologies if this is all old - didn't read the rest of the thread :p)

Have you changed the sensors? More common failure than ECU.
Have you tried both sides? Front & back? (back and front are different though I think - not sure never changed a back one!)

Have you checked the accelerometer? (Does your model have one??)

its not a sensor i fitted today its a switch on the gearbox.

i had a wire loose in the engine bay and i used rave to find out what the connector was and it was for a HTC switch on the gearbox my gearbox had a bung in it not another switch so i ordered a switch for it and then fitted that today

but my htc and tc lights are still on

They go off on their own.

You've not fixed the fault then ;)
