After some deliberation (10mins) I decided not to buy a 66k Suzuki Jimny and went daft by buying (placing a deposit anyway) a 1978 Landrover 88" Diesel Pickup on Ebay. My only experience of Land Rovers is that my Grandfather had a 2a and a 90, both were petrol and both tatty.
Anyway it looks in great condition and seems to have had some restoration in the past. It sits well and I can see no rust. The advert says come and drive it, so I am assuming it drives well. All in all I think it looks great. The insurance is cheap. Its got new tyres 235/85/16 Insa Rangers which are a 50/50 tyre thats great in the snow (I just read a few reports). The Mot is until June although its only done a few miles since then. The guy at the Garage seemed like a nice guy on the phone and the Garage itself has very good feedback.
So now I am here looking for feedback and encouragement. We pick it up on Monday and its going to be our only car for a few months. What should I look for and are these any good ?

if you bought it on ebay dont be bullied into parting with your money if you are not comfortable with the vehicle.make sure it is "as described" and not a bag of crap.if it is say it is not as described and walk away.ask for your deposit back,if he will not return it get on to ebay immediately.take someone with you who knows about landys cos there is a lot more to look out for than a normal eurobox.

I had a good nights sleep and I still want it. Now we have read the replies I am a lot more confident. Question is will I be able to collect it in the Snow on Monday ?

oh yes:D:D snow will just make it all the more fun and you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner:D just dress up warm lol, ;) i been using the de-icer as much on the inside of the screen as i have the outside lately:D

Can anyone give me a basic guide to the red and yellow levers ? and how to start a diesel landrover i.e what lights should come on (and go off when started). In my old car I just wait for the glow plug light to go off then start, is it the same ?
The Black lever is overdrive and i am ok with that.

do a search for "what do these levers do" to start turn key to glow plug position and hold for 20 secs then crank engine over.

Looks very good in the pics. The pickup is my favorite shape for the series and I'd have one like a shot. Definately take some one who has experiance of Landy's as there can be a whole lot of rust in place you can't see.

if you get ice inside the car then ,
you need one of these , i got one after a recommendation off a mate , draws all the moisture out the air in the car , never ever get ice inside mine now , cheap and reuseable , just bang it on the radiator for a week and its recharged ready to go
