Ok went into work today finished work came out started the car pull the hand break to take it off and it (the hand break leaver) just flopped down, tried to reverse out of the parking spot and the disco rear up at the rear but will not move can I take it the hand break is locked on??

This is my first Discovery BTW so any points would be of great help. It was an hour and a quarter walk back home in the pooring rain :(

Which disco you got?

I have a disco1 200tdi, couple of years ago i had to replace the handbrake expander this cured all my hand brake problem. been great since

Disco 2 300Tdi manual
Just wondering if there is a way of freeing the hand break manually (maybe underneather the car) so I can at least drive it to a garage?

At the momemnt the hand break leaver is floopy(as in not working at all) and the hand break is ON making me unable to move the disco.

There's an adjuster at the rear of the hand brake drum on the back plate, turn it with a spanner anti-clockwise and that will release the shoes.

The shoes should release as soon as the hand brake lever is released from the ratchet so that part may be sill be engaged and it's just the lever that has broken away from the rest at the pivot.

Is that right a Disco 2 with a 300tdi engine?

Regards

Hi Discool
Yes is a 1996 Disco 300tdi (I think they call it that but it still the 2.5 desiel engine). You don't happen to have an image of that adjuster do you I'm really new to this and don't really know what i'm looking at I was under it in the pooring rain last night late on I see what like looks like a drum facing forward I went at it from the passenger side and just the other side of the eshaust there was a big round thing the size of a dinner plate (or maybe slightly bigger). Is that it?

That sounds like it - big metal drum about 12" in diameter - about 4" thick under the centre of the vehicle. It has the rear prop shaft coming out the back of it and going to the rear diff.

Diff = the blobby bit in the middle of the rear axle.
Axle = the bit that keeps the wheels on.

On the back of it, at the bottom, there is a nut head on the surface - this is the adjuster.

Turn it anti-clockwise to release the handbrake - make sure the vehicle will not run you over as a result - perhaps stick it in gear first?

Good luck

Well decided to go tonight and give it ago, raining again  BUT it worked a treat !!! :D Managed to finally get the Disco home I'll call in tomorrow at the garage to get it sorted.

Thanks alot guys been of massive help!!! Been having to walk an 1hr 15 mins each way to work and back for the last two days  Aleast it's now at home, got me feeling alot better. :)

Prolly just oil contamination on the shoes from a leaking output seal.........

Could save yourself some money by just whipping the drum off and having a peek.........
