Halfshaft or CV joint?

Think I am just gonna have to strip both sides and see :( not what I wanted to do but not much choice.

Many thanks for the replies. I shall keep this updated with photos

Or many a bodger just strips the broken side, fixes what needs fixing and cleans up as best as they can. If it goes wrong later, then so be it :D

It's already going to be getting bodged with britpart parts lol. Phoned rimmer bros for a cost of a halfshaft and its 400 quid of a difference between aftermarket and genuine

try lrdirect, least you can usually choose from a couple of manus.

Well the good news is that the halfshafts and cv joints are spot on and no probs there. Bad news is the diffs gave up on me and has collapsed :(.

How easy is it to rebuild or am I easier fitting another axle?

It's definitely fecked now lol

Have you not got a diff?? Plenty second hand do you need 10 or 24 spline??

In sure if you ask some nice landyzone fella'a would sort you out I sold a 10 spline for £50 recently but think I'm out of 3.54:1 ratio ones. I usually have a big stock of sh diffs but stock has taken a hamering of late!!

Nope not at the moment but I'm waiting on a call back from a garage I use in falkirk. No idea how much they'll be after though.

As for how many splines its got I haven't a scooby. It's a 1987 and originally had a 2.5td with an LT77 in if that's any use. I do still have the halfshaft and cv joint out so if I can count the splines on the halfshaft would that give me a clue?

Very easy in that case if the diff splines are the same as the outer hub splines they're 24 if the splines are thicker and less of them slightly smaller in dia they are 10 spline

For that year they should be 10
Spline but so many landlines have had bits changed over the years H

Thinking about it I'm sure the halfshaft does have about 10 splines on it. Just need to get hold of a diff now and weld up the hole.

Great for someone with no time and no welding skills :p. Oh well, always time to learn

spotted a few discos being broken in the area if that's any use. Also a guy in stow I could ask if you want

Where abouts is that? There's one on eBay but delivery takes about a week which isn't much use to me. I know that a scrappy near me have just got quite a few discos in but I wouldn't know how to tell if its 10 spline or not

Well might be worth asking the garage to weld the hole dunno how much that'll be but it needs to be oil tight needs to be right some people bodge it and use epoxy resin which is a bodge but would get you home from a p&p without oil being thrown all over the place etc.

As for a diff I may have one but postage will be huge and I'm sure a Lz nearer will have one one if not a landy breakers up your way

Disco or rrc with domed one piece drive members had 10 spline. Take a rear diff as it'll be easier just pull rear shafts and drain oil and undo diff if the drive members are one piece flat ones or separate drive members like on a 90 chances are they are 24 spline. Likewise 200 tdi's were almost always 10 spline with domed half shafts only a very few late ones were 24 spline.

It's your best bet if the diff is in good cond

Front and rear diffs on these older landies are the same can be swapped front to back.

if you need it quick, then the scrappers is probably the best choice.
