Guys turning into driveway last night - loud clacking/clonking then lost drive in hi and lo. Have drive in difflock.

Research suggests half shaft or cv most likely.

But just need to confirm how to check....

Put it into gear and its the front prop that's turning so assuming its at the front? Is this correct?

Also, if I jack up front and spin each front wheel...is it the wheel that turns but doesn't spin propshaft that is the culprit?

And if both spin and propshaft does spin does that point to diff?

Been reading on here but just want to confirm my understanding before starting to investigate.

if you take it out of diff lock and take off the rubber boots covering the end of the hald shafts you can see which one is spinning with the engine on and its in gear.

Could be a simple drive member (I have LOOTTTSSS of experience of this of late)

Exactly the same happened to me the other week. Turned out to be a completely failed cv.

I thought mine was the diff at one point as I could jack up each front wheel independently and spin it but neither would turn the prop shaft

Thanks chaps.

Jacked up front. Puy in diff lock. Spun drivers wheel....prop didn't turn and there is a noise when spinning it that sound like metal in there. So have assumed its drivers side and am currently dismantling it. Had to wait to get the hub tool but started into it this evening now. Will share my findings.

Ps...Haynes is very long winded regards explaining dismantling it all!!!

HELP!!!

Took half shaft out - all intact but found this below.

Can anybody tell me what I am looking at and if this would cause the loss of drive??? Looks like big bearings and looks all rusty - I didnt drain the oil and there was nowt in there when opened up.

Need to get on road again so if anybody can help please do.

Ah ok that makes sense now after looking online.

The CV - I assume this will result in no drive then???

The fact there wasn't much grease or oil in there - is there anything else I should change just in case??

oh yuz

nice and rusty. I wouldnt like to see the other side or the diff,if it looks like that inside

Yeah not great at all - only had it few weeks and its been straight to work. Had parts gathered to do an in depth service this coming weekend!!!

Is there anything else that should be changed considering the state...the halfshaft splines look grand actually.

if thats the sort of maintenance its had, i would be inclined to check the rear axle as well. change all the fluids everywhere - pas, brake, clutch, all oils etc and dont forget to grease yo nips.

Yes I agree with you 100%.

What about the swivel housings - are they a wearing part that need changed frequently??? Just trying to ,make a list of things to change whilst its off - WITHOUT GOING MAD - and will prob now do both sides.
