Yes I agree with you 100%.

What about the swivel housings - are they a wearing part that need changed frequently??? Just trying to ,make a list of things to change whilst its off - WITHOUT GOING MAD - and will prob now do both sides.

They don't wear but from the looks of it they're bone dry. They should have swivel housing grease or ep80 in them though some are 'sealed for life' from factory. Either way that's one thing you'll want to top up too but if I were you I'd pull the other hub off and check that out

Looks dramatic, but CV joints aren't that expensive thankfully and not too hard to replace. You've done most of the hard work already in dismantling to this point. It looks like there's been water in there at some point, judging by the rusty colour of everything.
The other things to look at are the little tapered roller bearings top and bottom that enable the outer hub to swivel. Earlier models have a bush at the top rather than a tapered roller. Seeing as you've got this far undone it might be worth replacing those. The other thing that deteriorates is the chrome on your chrome swivel balls. Once they get rusty it doesn't make a good seal and lets oil out and water in. There's a large ring-shaped seal that goes in the back of the outer part of the hub that could be worth replacing too.

Yes, as others have said, have a look at your other ones too.

Well, that one was certainly sealed for life!

Yes true enough!!!

Went to order new cv from local specialist. He is convinced it is a 23 spline for my vehicle - 1993 200tdi.

But I have checked and double checked. Where halfshaft enters cv has 32 splines and where cv shaft/outer halfshaft exits is 24 splines. So am I correct in saying mine is 32/24.

Specialists are convinced its 23 and say other one is 33 but I have double and triple checked carefully and its 32 where halfshaft enters and 24 where it exits stub axle/hub etc.

Hes decent fella and very helpful so has ordered the 2 he refers to in the hope that one is the correct fit.

See, he is £19 +vat for the cv joint and the other 2 specialists I tried are £50 + vat for the cv.

Prices are for the cv only not the kit and are the same brand!!! Cant believe the difference in price. Although the guy I ordered from also supplied another Land Rover owner a Terrafirma +2 kit for £70 cheaper than the other specialists quoted!
