Half shafts

I've got a 1999 TD5 90 and the rear shafts are miss matched, the offside (short) is a solid 1 piece but the nearside is a 2 piece. Does anybody know if they should be solid or 2 piece? I've asked a couple of buddies one with a 2001 90 (1 piece shafts) and one with a 2002 90 (2 piece shafts). I'm trying to track down a rattle/knocking from the rear end and was wondering if having 1 wrong shaft could be a possible cause, I slightly suspect that the 2 piece is a HD item and should have a wide flange (narrow fitted) therefore making the shaft too long. I can't really see why they would because of that knock or rattle but I've tried everything else!
