Grind while heavy braking?

I had to slam my brakes on a couple of days ago when some tw@t pulled out in front of me, (very brave in a nissan micra vs my disco!!)
Anyway, I heard a loud ginding noise and felt the clutch pedal vibrating. This only happened when I was moving at speed as I tested it again doing about 15 mph and got nothing. It wasn't anything to do with the brakes as it wasn't that type of grinding, more like a toothed wheel hitting metal while spinning.
I also noticed similar when I changed down a gear whilst the revs were still a little high as I didn't want to slam the brakes on again.
I've tried to describe this the best I can but unfortunately I haven't got a clue about this.
Any suggestions?

That'll be yer ABS (Anti lock breaking system) by the sounds of it, was the break pedal pulsing against yer foot?

Never noticed, too busy wondering wot sort of mess the micra was gonna be if he didn't floor it!

No idea, is there an easy way to tell. Never had ABS on a motor before as they've nearly always been old bangers.

yeah, stamp on the anchors and try to lock up the wheels, when the tyres give up traction , you get a noise like you describe

Surely it shouldn't grind as loud as it does though. Is it a problem with the ABS? Its very loud, I thought something was gonna break!

When the abs pump fires up its quite loud

what year/model do you have?

the ABS can shake up the whole car sometimes...

'93 'L' reg 200TDi.

It isn't so much a shake but a metalic grinding noise. Feels like something ripping into my clutch.

If you have to do an emergency stop in a vehicle with ABS, push the clutch down with the brake.
Non ABS vehicles you leave the clutch in to use the engine to help stop the wheels from locking, pushing clutch just before you stall.
On ABS vehicles the wheels won't lock. If the clutch is still in the engine fights the ABS system, making it work hard then it would have done.

drive along somewere with 2 wheels on the grass and the other 2 on the tarmac and then stamp on the brakes whilst driving slowly, see if it happens then, if so i'd say its the ABS, then take the ABS fuse out (under the steering wheel) and repeat the process, if the symptoms have gone then its the ABS.

I had the clutch flat on the floor at the time, this was how I felt the rattle in the clutch pedal.

I'll try that tomorrow, what will this acheive though, apart from proving its the ABS, how do I sort it out?

it probably dont have ABS...

in which case, we're barking up the wrong tree..!

follow the brake line out of the servo master in the engine bay, see if it goes onto a square metal block with 4 other pipes coming out...

I'll have a look tomorrow in daylight and post back.

ignore me - its past my bed time .

if you're talking about brakes it's not always while braking.
I changed down the gears while the revs were quite high still and got the same grinding sound.
