Greetings, I've just been looking at my engine, and it appears that I have green goo seeping all the way around the head gasket. Is this just some kind of sealant, or something to worry about? How difficult is it to replace the head gasket? It doesn't look too tricky to me, but then I'm not a mechanic hehe.. My girlfriend will probably kill me if I try it too, as she thinks that I bought the landy for her ;)

Tom do you mean the head gasket or the rocker gasket ? Green out the head could be antifreeze dryed up , but rocker gasket sounds like sealand .
Do you want me to pop round and take a look sometime ? ( PM me if if ya want ) .

Hmm, rocker gaskets are the seals on the bolts going in to the cylinder head right? I'm looking at the big cork seal going round the whole cylinder head, so I'm thinking head gasket? I'll get a photo of it tomorrow. I hope it's not antifreeze :/ The expansion tank looks like it's almost pure water, so I don't think it will be. I'll think sealant for the peace of mind, just for the moment, but I'll get a photo tomorrow.

Cheers for the offer Sypher, I'll get back to you about that :)

CharlesY: It's the 2.5n/a :)

If its the cork gasket and you can easily see it, it is your rocker box gasket and so long as its not leaking any oil I'd leave it alone as the green stuff is more tham likely sealant.
Head gaskets fit between the cylinder head and the cylinder block further down the engine and are made of a layer of paper type material sandwiched between thin steel sheets.
To solve the mystery once and for all post a picture.

On your HG?

It should be clean and dry surfaces and a new HG, sealant (especially loads) on these will cause the HG not to sit properly. Ask POS about this!

Quite right! What a total bugger I made of that job. I followed discos advice, an emery cloth cleaned surface on the block and the head and no gasket goo what so ever and it's been fine ever sinse =)

Exactly! I used orange hylomar sealant between my rocker cover and the top of the head, but I wiped the excess of afterwards to make it look like a tidy job. Chances are whoever did it last on yours couldn't be bothered to clean up afterwards. If it is in fact oozing from your head gasket you've got big problems on your hands.

Hey guys, I feel a bit silly now. I'm pretty sure from your descriptions that I've been looking at the rocker cover gasket. The garage replaced it the other day when they were doing MOT work, despite me not asking them to touch it! (it was ****ing oil though) It's probably a good job they did given my greenness when it comes to mechanics hehe.. I manage to service my Laguna easily enough, just changing the air/oil filter, oil change and sparks etc, and I know _quite_ a lot about engines in general, but as you can see, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing :)

What I want to know is.... what's going to happen when she finds out who you really bought the Landy for! You'll be wishing is was the head gasket then!
