Isn't using your phone while driving illegal?

that aside, I know satnavs and phones have GPS Speedos but my question was are these stand alone items any good? Do they work? They seem like a good idea especially for Land Rover with non standard gearing and tyres etc.

I never have my Speedos on the dashboard unless they're spotlessly clean.

From my own observations, GPS speed indications are pretty sensitive. Having fitted a new set of BFG ATs after a set of bald road tyres, the difference between the car speedo and the GPS became much wider. Whether or not they satisfy the law is outside my experience.

Using your phone as a speedo or map/sat nav isn't illegal. All of my sat navs hav had a speed option, they will be more relable than your speedo.

Mine indicates a speed 5kph lower than speedo...
That is perfectly legal, as if you go by it you won't be speeding, it is reading the other way that is illegal.
Also stupid, as I once had a Mini that I "improved" but the new gear box meant the speedo underread and although In knew it, under the influence of fury at the way a certain garage was behaving towards Wifey, I drove through a speed camera and forgot. so got done!:(:(:(

When not using tom tom if I stick to speed limit indicated on speedo I'm sorted..theyre sneaky here with cameras at road side...but we all flash worning to each other when GNR are about...

I use the sat nav speedo, its more accurate and more stable. The Smiths speedo has mind of its own, good days and bad days. We have a very long (20 miles plus) section of average speed controlled motorway here. The sat nav puts me at the same speed as everyone else, the speedo would put me 5-10 mph faster on a bad day.

similar to ere in Frogland. As you say, safer to drive too slowly than risk not being quite on the limit!

What does it display, before it's picked up the necessary satellite signals?

Zero...when you power up a tom tom it reads your position and then works out position...you can sit at home in house and programme it for places you use...plug into car and immidiatly gives you your speed and the limit on the road your on...use it all the time on trips here in Portugal as the cops hide their tripod cameras to get fine revenue...
