Just been reading a thread about someone else's TD4 sounding like a hedge cutter, result was a broken crank shaft.

My TD4 decided to pack in whilst on a particularly busy part of the A1M last Friday. Sounded very much like a hedge cutter, eventually I got it transported to a garage I trust in Sheffield, very close to home.

They've said it sounds terminal, could be crank shaft/conrod/etc. The suggestion is to look at pricing up a replacement TD4 engine and compare that against the cost of spending 4+ hours or so on investigation work. They've submitted the details onto a parts locator network and are also looking at other suppliers too. It just so happens I've seen a couple of engines on eBay for about £500.

So I was interested in people's thoughts and suggestions on a good source of a new engine.

I think the garage's suggestion of comparing the cost of a new engine + fitting against investigation and potential repair work makes good sense. The engine in there may turn out to need major rebuild work and it's already done 115k miles. A replacement seems the best way forward...

Assuming you are not buying a recon unit then if you can look at the replacement in a car before you buy it and hear/see it running so much the better - which suggests a Landy breakers ? Try Rangeland on the A38 near Burton on Trent maybe
