Good morning everyone, I was wondering if you could replace the XEDI engine with a TD4. We blowned the head gasket twice on the XEDI and the mechanic said that it would be best to finde a engine. I found a TD4 engine in mint condition but i have not found any info online if the mounting points and electronics are compatible. So i came here for help
Cheers.

There are many differences between the up to 2000 model and 2001 onwards model. It's technically possible, but very impractical to do, as so much needs changing to make the TD4 engine fit and work.

I'm curious as to how the HG on the DI engine keeps failing, as HG failure is very unusual on that engine, just as unusual as a TD4 HG failing.

The L-Series diesel is a very good engine. In many ways better than the TD4 and is or was still in production in other parts of the world.

I’ve not heard of head gasket failure on these. Maybe you should get another mechanic to take a look?

As for swapping a Td4 in. The Td4 uses a different gearbox. Plus it’ll be using a different ECU. I’m sure it is possible to swap. But I would think it would be a rather major project. You’d need to ID all the differences and if any parts can be retained or converted. Then source all the other bits you need for the swap. If you aren’t doing the work yourself, I’d think the labour alone would cost more than buying a good running Td4 vehicle.

The L-Series was used in a number of Rover/MG vehicles. I’d try and source one of you can’t find one from a Freelander. This is assuming you really do need to replace the engine.

I have....was the head checked/skimmed? One of the heads Ive done, the head was so bad it was beyond skimming and a second hand one from an MG car was used. Cost £80 so it was a cheap fix in the end. :)
