Glueing Plastic clips to door glass

Hi! I am fitting new glass to my Defender Td5’s passenger door and need to fit the plastic clips to the bottom. I tried it today with one super strength industrial fix it all glue and gave it longer than the stipulated time to cure. Reassembled the door and it worked great until I lowered the window the second time, at which both clips slid elegantly off the glass.

I’ve searched loads of forums etc but this doesn’t seem to be addressed, so I would be very grateful for any of your views on what has worked well in the past to bond these plastic clips to the glass. Many thanks.

I used ordinary silicon to bond mine. The weight of the glass alone should be enough to hold it in place. I also fitted new runners in the frame and it's more snug than it was before. My only mistake was fitting the glass carrier slightly off. It now tilts forward and out of the rear vertical runner. No problem when stationary, but if you try to wind the window up while driving, the difference in pressure between inside and out makes the front of the glass to not quite slip into the runner at the top.

Thanks Mick. I did wonder about just using silicone. The runners are in pretty good condition but there is just a bit of resistance as the glass moves, which is why it’s weight alone wasn’t quite enough. I’m wondering whether there’s still a little bit of the old broken glass still behind the felt that needs cleaning out. I’ll have another good clean tomorrow and try a good dose of silicone.

Try roughing up the inside of the clips. If you use good glazing or aquarium silicone, it should hold.

Aquarium sealant is good on glass, as Mick has said. Most PU adhesives/sealants should work well too. I like Tigerseal, but there are loads out there that are pretty much the same. Anything but superglue!

A squirt of WD40 on the runners can help the glass move a lot.

Am about to start this process as some scroat broke my window to steal the dashcam… is it obvious where the tabs need glueing, is there a diagram somewhere or do I need to take the other door card off on other side to see where the glue tabs go? I was going to use epoxy

Wouldn't hurt to take the other door card off, then when all done you can refresh the grease on that side as well, and just for shits and giggles you could spray some rustproofer in there as well. You can see why a 2 hour job takes me a full day.

that’s what I am worried about, be a whole other day taking the other door card off

yeah I did that the first time, the glue has now come off in the recent silly heat, how do you make sure it's not off second time round?

Sikaflex is what they bond glass in with I think
