I've got a Series 2 landy on my drive we have been working on for a little while. We have rebuilt the engine, reseated the valve caps etc and it's working like a beauty! (head gasket was gone when we bought it so we decided to rebuild the engine while we was at it so I could learn a little more)

Anyway, the wiring is an absolute mess! Don't have a clue how the previous owner wired the switch panel, the switches go to so many Y splitters it is impossible to tell what they do. The glow plugs were also not wired which is what I am talking about now. I have designed a simple electronic circuit running off the battery which will act as a timer for the glow plugs. When the switch is pressed, the integrated circuit will keep the output high for ~5 seconds. The output of the IC will be wired to a 12V relay that will power the glow plugs as well as an LED for the dash. However, I don't have a clue what kind of amperage I will need the relay to cope with, I have a small 5A one which will be miles to low to handle the load. The glow plugs are wired in series. Also, would you reccommend an inline fuse for these? AFAIK it shouldn't be necessary but I have read about people doing this. Opinions?

I've got a 70amp relay in mine if that helps.
But I would say that 5 seconds is low; I leave them on for about 10 seconds, sometimes more in winter.

I just redid the wiring on my series 3 using a relay with parallel glow plugs i used 70a relay
and got my bits from vehicle wiring products good online catalog and next day delivery

best not to have a fixed delay even 10s too short when cold need to double it if required

:DI have just rewired mine on my series 3 (Although the engine is a series 2) using this LAND ROVER SERIES 3 STARTER SOLENOID 13H5952L on eBay (end time 11-Apr-11 11:14:50 BST) as the relay and a switch to actuate it running parallel plugs.
As to using a fuse in the circuit some people advocate it some don't useualy about 70 100 amp.:)

I also used the standard light in the dash wiring one end to the switch output and the other to earth so when the plugs are switched on the light illuminates.

Good day, please advise where the glo-plug relay is situated, the cover for the fuse box is missing on my Disco2.

Regards
