Hey all,

First post here. I've always wanted a Landy 90 I've just left school so I'm planning to get some money together and buy an MOT failure, and restore it before I start RT (I'm going into the Marines in Dec/Jan).

So basically I have until the end of this year to buy and restore a Landy, but to be honest I don't know the first place to start.

What I'm looking for is some rough prices, mainly for how much it is going to cost to buy it in the first place and what I am likely to have to repair.

Is most of it able to be done in my G.dads yard? He's and ex. mechanic, but still has people working in the garage.

Thanks,
Ross.

EDIT: I'm looking for something no bigger than a 2.5, preferably something on the cheaper side of things to run.

£100 will get you a wrecker. but how much you'll spend depends on what you find when you start stripping it down. Some people have spent £6K to £10K on rebuilding a landy. It all depends on what you want at the end of the project

Well I'm not after a mean off roading machine, at the end of it. Something that I can use everyday, but can take off road (gentle) if the need arises.

Anyone know any places (online) I can have a browse around to find something suitable?

Max budget is about £1000 to start with (poor student, n all).

If you are looking for an mot failure so bad that the guy hasn't repaired it himself then its going to be pretty rough.

It's one thing attempting a restoration yourself but I doubt that your friends are going to buy into it. With no real mechanical, painting, welding skills I think you may be in over your head here.

You indicate that you will be going into the marines shortly, basic training, and I would imagine that all of your time is going to be spent over the next few months you have restoring it rather than driving and enjoying it.

Take the time you have left and spend it with your friends and family, the army takes you away from them, Dec, Jan will be here before you know it.

Anyway you will get to play in plenty landies with the army, I was in the paras and we had them one tonne forward steer ****e, because we were mortar platoon in the fire support company. Try and get yer wings at brize, you dunt get to fly the herci now it's some sort of training ****e but, when you go opperational you will, or one of them yank fookers that sucks you out and you dunt need to jump. And it's a buzz, mind you so is the balloon.

Not meaning to sound cocky at all, but if you were in the Para's .. why do you have it in your head that the Royal Marines are part of the Army? Far from it, my friend.

Good point about the MOT having to be pretty rough to not be restored by the owner, didn't think of that...

As for the next few months being spent restoring it, rather than driving it, that's correct. Problem is, I'm not old enough to drive until about 2 weeks before I go to Lympstone.

Ebay is probably your best bet for cheap mot failures.

You should be able to get hold of a solid 90 or 110 with a few things that need sorting for anything between £500, to £1,000. I bought my 90 last year with a fair few things to fix, but it was plenty driveable. I've been doing little bits of work on it the year round (including an engine rebuild and fuel tank change etc), and the garage that sold me it have told me that they'd offer me the same price back for it part ex if I wanted, so I've added value to it.

The one engine that you want to avoid is the 2.5TD (19J) because they are officially voted land rovers worst ever engine. There are plenty about which have no problems, but that all depends on how well they have been looked after. A 12J (2.5N/A) or 200tdi is what you'll probably end up with, the 200tdi being a more superior choice, but the 2.5 N/A being a bit cheaper to insure.

We called yer cabbige heeds, un yer dunt fight on the boat its on the land, its called soldiering, not fookin marining thats wot boats do, oh and remember the paras came ashore wiff their feet wet but the marines had poly bags on em coz they were frighned of the water un couldnt fookin march coz of it, un the fooking dingy fookers lost the fookin batterys for the rockets sos when they got ashore they had to get the paras to fookin shoot the flying fings down wif gpmg's.

But in general I fink the marines are ok, a little bit, but a wud rather be a para tho coz theyre real soldjurs.

david, i hate to say it, but just about every post ive seen u write has made me think "this guys a bit of a ****".

why dont u stop bullying people and coming out with bollocks and actually be a bit helpful if you have the knowledge/experience that u claim to have.

It's called bantar, in reply to his reply, to my genuine advice which was helpfull and sincere or dunt you think it was.

I picked up my 1984 90 for £950 - the body isn't pretty but it had MOT and got another one 5 months later, just needed tax.

And I will be impressed if you find any 2nd hand landy in the world that doesn't need something fixing on it...

Well I hate to say it chris, but rather than come on and offer some advice to the fella you chose to make a personal attack on me. The fella was given good advice by me and he threw in a bit of cocky bantar back, and we could have got a bit bantar going with the military stuff but you stuck yer worthless, negative abuse in and spoiled it. You could have joined in though.

As has been said before, this place would be **** if it wasn't for the **** taking and bantar that flies about on a daily basis, and you should know it. You cant bully somebody here because they/we are all allowed to express ourselves and free to respond, at all times. A bully has the power to deprive the person of the right to express.

So in other words I offend you you tell me to fook off, I aint able to fookin sack you for it, so get a grip.

If you think my advice is a load of **** then tell me I'm a fud, and offer yours, don't sit there sulkin ffs.

Look forward to hearing from you coz am gona bully, I mean respond wif the approapreate bantar and **** takin. And I aint in the huff either.

ur full of **** mate anyway i was referring more to the thread where pos was askin for advice

You want to make up your mind, yer like a spoilt brat needin a slap on the legs, ye seem to have a brain like that hen on yer fred thing.

Anyway yer borin me, so, "fook off back ter yer pram"
