After watching all these different vids of people's engines running with various knocking rattling etc, I'm getting paranoid of every tap n rattle going on under my own Bennett

Seems to run fine to me although i am set to do valve clearances soon as well overdue but are there any vids of 300's that actually sound as the maker intended

I don't want to start going down the road of trying to fix what ain't broke .
I know diesels are a noisy engine but not been able to compare mine to another ,, so I'll wouldn't know if something was out of sorts or was a normal sound for this type of engine

Regards keith

Do you have a Dial Test Indicator (DTI), either metric or Imperial?
If you have a good sense of 'feel' you could use 'finger' or 'feeler' gauges.
Do you have the correct-sized spanners needed along with an 8mm flat bladed screwdriver?
Do you have a socket to fit the crankshaft bolt to turn the engine over?

I haven't checked valve clearances for ages and ages. Can't remember the last time.I had the valve seals replaced about two years ago. I supposed they were checked then. My other vehicles have done hundreds of thousands of miles and were never checked or needed to be checked.

Oldseadog is listing the tools needed to do your tappets, as your first post gives the impression you are going to do them, but are worried about knowing what your engine should sound like.
Listen to you engine more often. If it's running well and, you've been listening to it, then you'll know what it sound like when good. If things change eg performance or noise, then you stand a chance of knowing something is wrong either way.
Videos posted for sound identification often are not that clear anyway.

I think a Dial Indicator is a bit of overkill for a tappet check and adjustment..................:D:D

Cheers
I've had one since I was an apprentice, and it cost 2/4d to have it calibrated each year!:eek:
Then we learned how to do it ourselves at the Tech! :D:D:D:D
Unfortunayely, I no longer have my slip gauges :(:(

A Dial Indicator or a Dial Test Indicator???

There is a difference.

Cheers
