If the battery is good and all the connections and fuse box are OK, I'd look to see if it has any oil in it and also check the colour of the oil. Black means trouble. Diagnostics would also be a good idea.

hi had the diagnostics on the car today and it turns out to be the throttle position sensor has gone iffy so where is this on the rang rover 3950 engine am i right in thinking it's the little round thing opposite where the throttle cable fits to the throttle body and held in place by two screw's

Under the passenger seat is the transfer box ECU, have a sniff and see if it smells of burning, try and see if you can select low range. a duff transfer ECU can give the symptoms you describe. Transfer ECU's fail more often than Auto box ECU's.

Have you checked the oil?

You need diagnostics.

i believe he is using autologic diagnostic's so are these ok with r/rover's or doese it need test book my chap say's it's a broken wire between the engine and auto box ecu's can this be the problem

Sounds like he's guessing. On the diesel, the only wire I remember that goes direct from the auto box ECU to the EDC is the torque reduction request line on the diesel. There may be others.

The connectors and their locations are all detailed in RAVE as are wire colours although LR are not reliable with the colours.
