:welcome2: I have a landy that has no service history so as part of my servicing I wish to change the gearbox oil on my 1984 SWB petrol 2.25l gearbox and transfer box. I have identified fillers and drain plugs

My 5 speed gearbox looks to have 2 drain plugs, one underneath and another nearby on the side. How can i identify which gearbox i have? i have seen reference to model 77, 85 and 95. Will there be two drain plugs?

Is there a gearbox and transfer box serial number (s)
Is there a filter inside one of the drain plugs?

What fluids do you suggest i use in the gearbox and in the transfer box?
Thanks :)

your gear box will be 50a---- is an lt77 side plug is drain ,bottom rear 24mm 15/16 socket size is filter ,should be cleaned ,gearbox wants just short of 3 litres dexron 2 or 3 atf ,transferbox takes about the same of ep90 or equivalent not gl5

If no service history, would strongly suggest replacing all fluids (front and rear diff, engine), and also prioritise changing the timing belt, air and fuel filters.

Makes sense to get it to a good base standard.

the oil filter was so firmly attached i had to remove the housing from the block and use a vice to remove the filter. In doing so the gasket ring between the the engine block and the filter housing has been damaged and ideally needs replacing. are these easily available? btw what is the sensor probe that screws into the housing? is it used to measure the engine temp? Also what model filter fits to the 2.25. The one i was sold has too large ID thread on it?

The oil filter was a UNIPART GFE 487. what is the moderm day equivalent brand/model number? Thanks.

oil filter is the same as all 4cylinder engines and v8s fitted to def upto and including 300tdi err3340,the oil cooled filter housing is the same as later 2.5 diesls or petrol and part no is etc5347 non oil cooled or err1347 oil cooled ,oil pressure switch is prc6387 on both, and oil cooled housing can be blanked to become non oil cooled, i would have a used one somewhere if you get stuck
