Hi guys, that's really beyond my area of expertise... my bilstein shocks which i was pleased with how they worked started leaking on the rear after about 6 years, i'd like to try some gas shocks this time, is it a good ideea ? I'm not up to fit expensive fancy shocks like OME or simlar also i dont want cheap sh*t either. I've seen some KYB gas shocks suitable for my vehicle at a decent price that's why i'm asking.

Only six years thats a bit premature, are they the all black or the black and yellow (comp version) ?.
The “gas“ dampers can still leak their oil, the the pocket of gas on top of the oil is just aid cooling and stop the oil from foaming therefore not performing as they should which I understand can happen in fast road/track or fast off road use.

I purchased and fitted Bilstein black yellow dampers on one of my road cars believing they would last for ever, and they have be faultless so far 😃

My disco still has the factory fitted items, Monroe I believe.

Yes, strangely only the rear ones are leaking, both of them... the front ones are perfect, mines are looking like this

After i made some research i realised that maybe that's why they started leaking only on the rear cos for SLS the bilsteins i have are not recommended on the official site: "Remarks: without pneumatic suspension" which i saw when i bought them but coudnt find any logic for that then so i ignored it. Those on the front are still perfect and they were changed at the same time

Gad shocks are still oil shocks. They just use a high pressure nitrogen charge in with the oil to prevent oil foaming and help take heat from the oil to the outer casing.
I theory gas shocks are more likely to leak, as the seals are holding gas pressure as well as oil. However in practice the gas pressure actually keeps the seals in tight contact with the shaft, so leaking shouldn't happen for 100k or so.

To help reduce roll on my D1 I was advised to fit gas shocks, Gaz ones, so I did. They worked like a dream.
They've never leaked.

This was a while back and I was told a little while back that Gaz ones are not as good as they used to be.
I'm sure a Google of "What are the best gas shocks at the moment" would come up with something.
