defender 1988 lwb V8 3.9efi. Has sprung a leak. So ive decided to replace it as it cant be driven. Assuming I get the tank (85quid on ebay) can I fit it myself with just rudimentory mechanical knowledge?

Thx in advance

The leak is coming from the tanks base.(standard tank fitted)

Would I be correct in saying that the tank is leaking at the joint with the tank guard?

yes. The only problem that you may come across is that the captive nuts at the front of the tank may be fecked and rotate when you try to undo em. I used a pry bar to hold em still when I did mine. Make sure the tank comes with new rubber seals for the sender and pump too.

A word of warning, when ye come to take the fuel pipe off the tank the nut on the fuel line should be held and not turned! It's the nut on the fuel tank side that moves. If ye try undoin' the fuel line nut ye'll twist and knacker the pipe;)
It's quite an easy job to do really. Did mines not that long ago but haven't got 'round to doin' a 'how to' yet.;):D

Bugger me if I wasn't just looking in your 'how to' section for this exact problem.
I'll bide me time , got a slight leak from this area, more of a seep actually, needs sorting though.

hehe nothing went as planned. The tank turned out to be another type WFE000190 with the return parallel with the breather/filler. The nuts/bolts holding the old tank in place were easily removed due to WD40 days earlier.
All the Jubilee clips proved a problem but removed using junior hacksaw. Lets hope the Sender located at the top of tank, survived the process hehe. Oh ans even the compression joint was not apparent...held by a jubilee clip hehe.
The hole cut in the floor to allow access to the sender opened easily and i noticed the strut below was cut for this purpose. but they'd reinforced it below professionally so,,,no problems there.
i'll have the new tank fitted end of the month. Hopefully alls well ends well.. thanks everyone

i replaced mine in mar / apr, easy enough to do , they always leak between the bottom of the tank and the tank guard, the mud and **** sits in there and the bottom rotts thru , seen the petrol and diesel do it,

mine were a right ****ter :(

Well she wants a P38.. Likes the shape and drive height. She currently has a Ford Maverick. So a P38 would be alot better but dream on for now hehe.
