I still get a small amount on my pressure cap, but not much.
I did my oil cooler over 3 years ago, and don't need to clean the tank often now.

I agree with John ( Nodge) I have yet to see that an M47 Td4 or R40 diesel engine have head gasket failure, I think the PCV as been blocked and oil as got in, of even the via the oil cooler at some point. do a few more flushes run the car and keep a check on it, that is what I would do. make sure the car as a full service clean Air filter, PCV filter, clean manifold & EGR also MAP sensor and enjoy driving the car.
Thank you so much for your advice and support I will do as you and John has suggested and keep monitoring it. Can you tell me what the PCV filter is ? I have recently changed all the oils and oil / air filters and the oil cooler but not sure about the PCV filter ?

PCV filter is or (crankcase filter)
If left for to long they go hard and no longer filter the oil as they get blocked.

I'm a bit late to this thread as I've not been online for a bit - but a couple of points which may be of use.
1) my oil cooler went a while ago but I caught it early. I used https://www.wynns.eu/product/extreme-cooling-system-degreaser/ and it took two or three drain and refills to get all of the remaining contamination gone but my coolant now looks like that of a new engine, and I've done about 3k miles. I cleaned the expansion tank each time too.
2) I have to take @Nodge to task though...

It can be removed, as @Nodge and I did on mine...You can't remove the thermostat on a TD4, as it's an integral part of the housing.

It can be removed permanently, as I took yours out!
You can't remove it temporarily, so as to allow the coolant to circulate all the time for cleaning though, which I think was being suggested in that post.

Solved
Ok just to update everyone, I had been having cream appearing in my expansion tank for over 12 months, I was worried it was the Hg but being the bmw engine I figured unlikely. I changed the oil cooler first but alas still had the problem, next was the auto gearbox oil cooler which i replaced 1 month ago and im happy to report my creamy crap has gone. I did test the old oil cooler by filling it with water and then after a few hours found it leaking out of the oil nozzle so figured there must be a split in the cooler itself. Happy it wasnt the dreaded hgf, big thanks to Nodge who mentioned it was unlikely on this type of engine.
