Hey guys,
I recently bought a 2000 Discovery 2 td5.
I plan on giving it a thorough service at the weekend, but for now I've just been working through all the little annoying problems (missing bulbs etc).

So I noticed in the handbook is says the diesel engines are supposed to have a warning light for excess water in the fuel, which is supposed to light up when first switching the ignition on as a test?

On my discovery this doesnt happen, and im wondering if its a bulb that has blown or something else (although from reading around am I right in thinking that this is an LED and so not replacable?)

I checked the plug on the bottom of the filter, and it wasnt plugged in, so I plugged it in and still no light.

Should the lamp light up initially even if the sensor isnt plugged in?

Cheers guys,
Kane

The sensor on the fuel filter has probably been disconnected, look in the rear drivers sdie wheel arch and you can see the filter with a taped up lead that is not plugged into the bottom of the filter housing.

Thanks guys,
Well after a bit of driving with the sensor now plugged in, the filter light seems to flicker on and off randomly. The initial bulb test now also comes on randomly when switching the ignition to position II, although it is usually not showing more than it is showing.

Is this a problem with just dirty contacts/wiring? I would assume the bulb test doesnt depend on the state of the sensor?

Cheers

normally the self test must be managed by the instrument pack's internal hardware and doesnt have to be affected by the sensor's circuit... this sensor is quite odd though, cos as long as it's connected it enters in the fuel pump relay's circuit and will come on if the relay or the pump feed circuit has some problems.... the sensors are oversensitive for theyr purpose but as long as you have it IMO keep it and if the warning will come on together with driveability issues check the fuel pump relay or it's wiring to pump
