Fuel Consumption

On average driving on open roads you should be getting 15 litres / 100 km (18 mpg). If you use the car mainly in traffic expect this to be nearer to 20 litres/100km (14 mpg) or worse. Best I've ever done is 14 litres/100km (20 mpg)

Hi, old, thread, but maybe still somebody around to answer. I just bought a 1998 Discovery I V8 3.9i, and fuel consumption is horrible. 9 mpg when driving 50/50 city and motorway. It seems somebody has tampered with the ecu previously. the check engine light only flashes for 10 nanoseconds when switching on ignition. I am used from my other cars that it should stay on and switch off only after the engine has started.
The OBD connector is almost dead, it only has power, my ELM327 dongle does not connect properly.
Anybody here who can tell me how to check whether Mass Air Flow Sensor and ECU are working properly?

thanks

l.
