I've had my Freelander for 18 months.
Been looking at some threads on the fuel burning heater, I didn't even know I had one.:doh: Just checked & found the exhaust tube in front of the front n/s wheel so I assume I have one but it's never worked to my knowledge. I've always thought that the car does take a long time to get to normal running temperature.
Is there a switch to turn it on? If not are there any common faults with them? It may be that the previous owner disconnected it?

it should come on whenever its pretty cold, ie when its frosty outside. theres no switch for them.

check the fuse hasnt been pulled. if it hasnt pull out the fuse and put it back after a few seconds to reset the unit incase its shut itself down.

Yep madness that they don't mention it. Scared the crap out of me when mine first come on and I didn't know what it was as they sound bloody loud ! Lol
 
Found mention in the handbook of a ceramic heater. Is that the same thing?
I've also been out to the car in the dark & freezing cold, put the heater to max & the blower on with the just the ignition on. Thought I could hear a buzzing from the exhaust tube but not sure. There was definitely no loud noise of any sort. I shall investigate further tomorrow with shoes & clothes on!

I think the reason they don't mention it is because unless you have the optional timer (which is brilliant by the way) or the remote switcher-on gizmo, the driver has no control over it at all.

To reset it you need to pull the fuse for a few seconds I believe.

I'm not sure if that is No. 5 under the steering wheel or No. 5 in the engine compartment, as the handbook and Haynes both are unclear they say starter and engine management. I would just try both - unless someone can tell us which No. 5

No - the ceramic heater is a different beast altogether. I've never seen one.

If you have the stainless steel flexy exhaust pipe about 1" diameter at the front passenger side bumper then you have the diesel fbh.
 
Hello again,

Just read your last post more carefully.

The fbh will only switch itself on when you actually start the engine when the outside temperature is around 5 degrees C or less.

It should run (noisily, perhaps with some smoke coming out the exhaust) until the temp gauge starts to rise and then shut itself off.

If it has had an error (flame-out) it will need to be reset - hence the need to pull the fuse.

Only folks with a timer or remote can make the heater work for a max of 30min without the engine running.

The FBH is very noisy, you *will* know when its running!

If you only run down to the shops and the thing is still on when you turn the engine, it runs for a little while on its own. I took mine to the dealers after that happened to me, to see what the hell was wrong with it.

Mine one, now only comes on when its really really cold outside, I think the temperature switch need replacing (not that I am under the impression that it still works at all, it is a landrover)

The dedicated temperature sensor for the fbh is behind the front bumper - easily changed - once you actually find it!

Have pulled the fuse but it's obviously too warm at the moment so barring taking the front bumper off I shall have to wait for the weather here 'darn saff' to change.

It gets just as cold darn sarf as it does up north you know......
 
I bypassed the outside temperature sensor with a manual switch in the driver's glovesbox, now I'm in control whether the fbh will work or not.

 
Reason why I did it was that my wife didn't like the smell and fumes when the fbh was running out, this always happened in the garage as I do mostly short trips so when my wife had put the wash in the garage and I came home after such a short trip ...... Now I can leave it off and when doing a longer trip I just switch it on and have it run as normal.
 
I also got fed up with people telling me my car was on fire which they thought it was because of the smoke coming out of the fbh exhust when I had just got out of the car might install a switch but then again might not what would you do----- FIGHT
