Had a good search about but can't find what I'm looking for

I have a 51 plate TD5 ES
problem is when I turn the steering wheel slightly from the centre to the left I hear a whining noise coming from the front of the vehicle (occurs when the wife and kids are not in the motor as well - so I've discounted this) this occurs mostly on the motorway or at least that's when I hear it, from other threads it would seem as if the front wheel bearings may be on their way out but I can't find any information on how to replace these, I can find how to check them though. The RAVE manual doesn't seem to give too much information on it either.
Any help would be appreciated, is this a DIY job or should I put santa on hold

this is very much a diy job...

However, sit down!!!

You cannot just buy £10 wheel bearings for a Disco2, you have to buy a whole hub unit which contains the bearings and the ABS wheel etc... this is around £200.

Jack the car and wobble the road wheel, you'll feel it if the bearings are on their way...

Yes, I have had both front hubs replaced, and one at the rear (fronts at ~94000 miles, and rear just after). The front hub is a complete unit (part # TAY100060 I think). They will be ~£200 each. My local independant dealer supplied & fitted both front hubs for £500...

Thanks for all the replies however I tried the jack up the wheel and move from side to side it would appear there is no movement in either wheel so I don't know what to do next???????? any ideas

I didnt do my own and you have to take off the hub and take out halfshafts.Nota small job but doable ifyou havethe time, patience and tools

my wheel bearing has no play in it but if you spin the wheel you can just hear it i had to leave it a long time (500 miles) for it to make the noise all the time before i could find out if it was the left ro right wheel that needed doing

Just reading about your wheel bearings. I think you'll find that they're the same hubs as the P38 Range Rover. You can buy the bearings for around £60 each from Paddocks at Matlock Paddock Spares - Land Rover, Range Rover Parts & Accessories - Discovery, Defender and Freelander.
I did all 4 on our P38. Same problem, very noisy but no play. They are a single unit bearing made up of 2 tapered roller bearings. Bit of a bugger to do! 25 tonne press, hot spanner (not a nicked one!), a sledge hammer and a very close shave with the windscreen the first one jumped apart. I also had to cut the race off the stub axle because the bearing broke apart. I also had to make a special bracket to hold the hub onto the press. This was made from 3/4 steel plate (slight bent by the end of the process!).
It took me the best part of the day to do all 4.
Good luck!

I also jacked up the car and looked for roughness/play in the hub bearings...I couldn't find any either. When the hubs were off though, you could feel the roughness. However my problem exhibited differently, it was only when cornering that the car sounded like a coffee grinder was running under the wheelarch...

Eventually got fed up with the grinding noise when turning even slightly left, due to the cost of parts I gave the Disco to a well known Independent in Edinburgh.
Turns out it was the nearside bearing - I felt as if the noise was coming from the front offside.
£200 (approx) part for the genuine article, no point in buying the copy ones as copies don't seem to last.

As others have said, this sounds to me like it could be steering -related.

I would be checking the belt, tensioner, and bearings of all components driven by the serpentine belt, to see if any of them have worn bearings. First thing to check, however, is the level of fluid in the pas tank.

Good luck

Dave

Yes. You can't always feel the play in the bearings by jacking and wiggling the wheel. I couldn't - even when my hubs were shot to bits...

The MOT guy picked it up tho - he jacked the car and levered with crowbar to demonstrate the play in the bearings...
