Freelander Whirling Noise

My 1999 Freelander XDI has a whirling noise!
Its not coming from the Engine as I can still hear it when I am coasting out of gear.

I have just had a brand new Diff fitted so it can't be that can it?
I also had to put on x4 new tyres on as they were badly worn because of the Diff.

It was not there before the new Diff was fitted but then again I doupt if I would have heard it over the noise of the broken Diff!

When I go faster the pitch of the whirling gets higher and visor verser.

I took it back the the 4x4 garage who fitted the Diff to give it a check over, but he said that he could not find anything wrong.

Is this noise normal?

are the tyres road tyres or they gota bit a lug on em?
 
it may sound silly but have you checked that there is nothing caught on the drive shaft some friends of mine put cable ties on mjne it took me days to work that out almost drove me mad
 
I still had the old tyres on for a week after the new diff was fitted, so I could here the whirling noise then as well as after the new ones were fitted.

Ok! did they put oil in the diff? has been forgotten before. Bad wheel bearing can make some strange noises and pitch alters with speed.
 
If the noise is central under the car it could be from the VCU support bearings. Driving with the prop removed will confirm this.

Can you pinpoint exactly which area it's coming from? Wheel bearing noise can change slightly in a turn as you load or unload the faulty bearing.
 
Simplified;
mark where the bearings are positioned, mark where the props line up with the diffs, disconnect the props from the diffs first and support them, then unbolt the bearings and lower the props and VCU as an assembly. Warning its very heavy, and it's easy to damage the cv joint near the ird.
