Hi all,I wonder if someone can help me.
Has anyone changed the engine oil on a td4?.I am told its a bit of a fuss. what does it involve? All help would be apprecited.
Thanks

Sump guard removal (8 bolts) and 36mm socket to remove filter cover as the filter is just a paper element, not the normal metal screw on canistor, Other than that Half an hour job

And don't rely on the 6,8 liter you need to add as is mentioned in the handbook but go more for the 5,5 liter as clutch says. (Always check the level afterwards of course as there might be a point about the "length" of the dipstick, of the car.)

Hi Lamby
Do you have a branch of National tyres anywhere near you?
I have just had a qoute for an oil change for my Freelander td4 2001,they will use Castrol edge 5W-30 full synthetic and dispose of the old oil for £31.50.
Book this on line and pick your branch and time for them to do the job. Hope this helps

Regards David

Hoping for a bit of help here. Just serviced my '05 TD4 Freelander. After cursing the person who invented the undertray, I removed what I thought was the sump plug but only about 1 litre of oil came out that was much cleaner than the manky engine oil. I then found the correct sump plug and did the service.
What is/was the first sump plug for? If it helps, it was magnetic, unlike the engine plug.

A picture would help.....but I'd put money on you drained the ird.....do not drive it until you have topped this back up with the correct oil.

I agree - most likely the IRD - you need one litre of 75w-90 to refill.

Expect the fill plug to be as tight as hell - a log extention bar is usually needed.

If you'd drained a manual g-box you would get 2 litres out.

An auto would have drained around 4 litres.

So I'm pretty sure it's the IRD

Thankyou Gentleman, you are right. Refilling it was awkward and the nut was very tight. I won't be doing that again. Once I'd undone the correct sump plug, I managed to pour used engine oil all over the tarmac at the back of the house. Lesson learned.

Either sprinkle some sand on the oily patch or kitty litter works even better if you crush it up fine.
