 Can anyone help, I get a noise on start up from the engine bay on the passenger nearside wing. This starts after about 40 seconds. If I switch the engine off it continues with a greally loud humming and whining noise, with some gurgling. This continues for a few minutes 9with the engine off) and then goes to a quieter loud whistle for 1-2 minutes then cuts out. The first noise is really quite loud in the cabin.

If you start the car up again and drive it for say 20- minutes, and then switch the engine off, the noise starts up again!

This cant be right can it. I have it booked in under warranty, however the dealer is giving me the old "they all make that noise sir" routine saying its the pre-heater.

Your help would be appreciated.

I can e-mail a sound file if you wnat to hear what its like - just mail me at [email protected]

Hi simon,

If your car has a small kind of exhaustpipe on the front right hand side (see picture below), = passengerside for RHD cars, it means it is equipped with the "fuel burning heater" (FBH), this device is starting up if the temperature drops below 5°C and stays on as long as the temperature of the cooling water has not reached (I think) 80°C. This device does indeed make all kinds of weird noises and sometimes clouds of blue/black smoke comes out, this is very ennoying when you do short trips and you enter the car in the garage with the FBH still running as when it stops it exhausts also a whole cloud of fumes which are a pest in the garage.
Good luck and take care.
