Hi all i have just purchased a Freelander TD4 SE auto on a 53 plate (my first landrover) I have a quick question for other owners - At 70mph motorway driving is it correct that the RPM is approx 3500 rpm . If not correct is there a problem with the car , or is this just usual and nothing to worry about .

thanks in advance .

Euro piece yeah that's normal I have a freelander sport td4 and mines rpm the same at 70 and spoken to my mechanic and the is normal!!regards

The mph/1000rpm is different for all of the models.

TD4 Manual top gear is 24.3mph/1000rpm
TD4 Auto top gear is 26.6mph/1000rpm

1.8 Manual only top gear is 19.5mph/1000rpm
V6 Auto only top gear is 22.9mph/1000rpm

So 3500rpm in a TD4 should be 93.1mph
At 3500rpm in 4th gear a TD4 is travelling at 68.25mph.

I have a data sheet which gives all the road speeds at 1000rpm in all gears for all the gearboxes for all the models - but thats enough I think.

I dread to think what the mpg is at 3500 in 4th gear.

Whoa holy **** SV I'm pretty sure I'm not doing 3500 at 70! I'll have to check but it's less than that. Mind you, it's possible that the EWP is freeing up alot of grunt at 70 with that much ram air going over the rad - it's hardly working at all whereas the mech pump is gulping down quite a few horses!

Yeh I'm going to have to check this, I'll be on a dual carriageway later so I'll be able to tell. Hopefully I won't have egg on my face .

The data sheet I quoted is dated April 2004.

I don't know if they changed the gear ratios or final drive ratios over the years - at least I've never heard of it.

Different tyre sizes from the original LR fitment might make a difference too of course.

And the speedo is a bit optimistic by about 6% in most cases.

The rev-counter is pretty accurate.

I've checked my speedo against my sat-nav and know exactly what speed I'm doing.

Very Polizei and Speed Camera aware me.

My 215/70's may contribute you're quite right. Will have to do a satnav/rev counter check :).

if it's the auto, could force it into 5th and see if the revs drop.

Don't forget when its cold, it will be very reluctant to change up until the engine warms up, not a fault, controlled by the ecu.

That would be normal for an auto with the usual optimistic speedo.

2500rpm in 5th is 66.5mph so a speedo indicating 70mph is 5% high.

2150rpm in 5th is 57mph.

Cheers sv

I know one thing tho if my td4 was rattling away at 3500rpm on the motorway it would be doing 80+ mph so to me i would say the poster has a problem with his td4 auto
