Hi,

My TD4 Sport has had a knocking noise for probably 6 months now and has recently got worse. It sounds to me like a bush or a drop link etc but my mechanic has had a look and sees nothing wrong. The knocking occurs when driving on rough areas of roads or going over speed bumps. It also appears to stop when its raining!
If you rock the car from side to side or forwards and backwards to noise doesn't happen.
Do these symptoms ring any bells with anyone?

Thanks in advance

Brian

As MHM says above, probably the front bush on your rear diff. It can also cause a loud knock under hard acceleration and braking.

i had a knocking noise on my 98 1,8 freelander and it sounded to me as if it was at the back but my local garage found that it was my antiroll bar links and bushes which was on about £40 inc labour have you checked this?

The anti roll bar and drop links are fine according to my mechanic. Was under it checking the subframe/chassis mount and there is no movement. No movement in rear diff either.
BTW, the FAQ section is ****e and when I search the forum all i get is posts telling people to search.
Threw a load of grease around the springs and it appears a little quieter. Had a problem with a squeak/rattle a few months ago and it turned out to be the front top struts which a load of wd40 cured... dunno what the craic is with the suspension.

As previously stated it is a classic symptom of a worn diff mount/mounts usually the front rear. Do you get a clunking sound when accelerating or heavy braking. If so then would have another look at the mounts.

if it is the sub frame it will not go away with the wet you will get a cracking sound of it I would go with the diff mount inspect them all especialy the front one you will need to lower your sub frame and be sure to toque the bolts up properly or you will suffer from the nuts working loose on the chasie as i did after a supposed mechanic did mine for me but never again

You can change the front one with out dropping the sub frame. just support the diff remove all the bolts from the front mountings, remove the bolts from both rear mountings and you can push the diff over to the side and get the front mounting out, it takes a bit of manoeuvring but not a bad job to do.

I put a load more grease around the passenger springs and the top strut and sprayed wd40, took the car out and the noise had gone.
The noise appeared to be coming from the passenger side, it was happening if i drove the passenger side over a speed bump and kept the drivers side on the flat and not vice versa.
Is there something in the shocks that would cause a knocking if its not lubricated?
