Freelander 2 (LR2) Knocking/clicking from rear.

I took my FL2 in for a service last week. As I drove out of the garage, there was quite a loud banging for a few seconds as I pulled onto the main road. Of course, I drove a bit further before turning round and going back to the garage. The mechanic said it might be the suspension settling, as it had been on ramps with the wheels hanging and that it might settle down. That was just before he closed for Christmas and new year.

since then, it’s been intermittent knocking/clicking as I turn into or out of parking spaces, ie, on full lock at very slow speed. There’s no noise cornering at a higher speed. Took it back to the mechanic the other day and he reckons it’s the diff. Personally, I don’t think it is. Any ideas?

Diffs normally whine when failing.
Have the springs been checked for cracks or breaks?
It's reasonably common for springs to break, especially after they've been allowed to fully extend on a lift.

Sounds like Clicking are normally CV joints but they could have stuffed doing the brakes up

Sounds like Clicking are normally CV joints but they could have stuffed doing the brakes up. Check the dust shields are not scraping on the discs

that’s what I thought, but there’s been no whining at all. I’ll check the springs, but what am I looking for apart from a clean break?

the nearest I’ve heard to the noise is when a front cv joint went on my 300tdi discovery, but this is nowhere near as bad, or loud. I’ve checked the brake dust cover plates.

Ok get it up in the air and get your hands on suspension parts with a crow bar start moving stuff around see if the tie rod ends are tight, Smack the tyres with a mallet an listen for any noises etc

I won’t be able to get it up in the air until after the weekend. Will update then.

Quick update. I still haven’t had a chance to get it up in the air yet, but I’m starting to think it’s brake related. Having said that, I hooked up my diagnostic tool to it today, which threw up a few faults. I erased all of them and the clicking/knocking seems to have stopped. Does that make any sense to anyone?

Also, twice in the last two days, my fuel gauge has dropped to empty, then slowly climbed back to the correct reading? Weird.
