hi again i really appreciate all the people who took time out to reply to my last post and who told me to buy the freelander td4 or the di and not the petrol version, i have listened to you all but i just cannot afford the td4 or di prices so i am going to have to slump for the petrol version.

what i would like to know is what problems is there with the petrol version and what should i look for when i go inspect it?

They eat head gaskets and vcu's and ird's and the chassis cracks and the list is endless. don't get a gaylander, just buy a disco far more capable and reliable. and probably cheaper. If you buy the petrol engined Gaylander the garage bills will be more than the money you saved by going petrol.

dont bother - save yo money and get a doozil - the petrol will cost yu more long term.

for example - my KV6 cost me 6500 in a year above normal running costs, in repairs.

now go back and reconsider :D

an wot he ^^^^^^ says anorl.

Check, if possible, to see if it using / losing coolant. is the coolant perfectly clean, drive it slowly on both full locks to see if anything in the transmission is binding. Study its history. how many owners and why is it for sale now. Has the head gasket been changed and can you see the bill. Make sure you don't pay over the odds, keep some cash back for the terrible events that are being forecast!
Bear in mind according to some postings every petrol Freelander is either on the back of a recovery truck or in a garage being repaired. I am puzzled to see so many being driven about.

I would have thought the Tdi L series were going for the same price as a petrol 1.8, apart from hgf, the diesels are prone to the same generic probs. Why are you settling for 2nd choice?

A good point, no one could deny they have more problems than they should, and its good to be forewarned, but there are a lot of good ones around. Don't ask me how you find them!

Having said that, I wouldn't buy a petrol!

If I couldn't find a diesel at the right price, then I would have the confidence to buy a petrol. But I'm an enthusiast and am pretty sure I would be well armed to spot and deal with HGF when it crooped up.

(Also had a K-series in a Rover 400. HGF occured on a motorway trip with no coolant/mayo warning and so we had to have it reskimmed and sorted by a mechanic friend ... who was so chuffed with the job that he went on to buy the vehicle when we sold it a few months later.)

If you are serious about buying a petrol, there are plenty of happy 1.8 owners out there. Just be facdidious about checking oil and water and reasearch head gasket failure, and the possible fixes (new improved head gaskets, liners, thermostat mod).

Cheers

Hi all,
as a new member cant help noticing that there seems to be an awful lot o people on this site / forum that are anti petrol freelander. No denying that it has more than its share of problems with the dreaded HGF, But can only speak as i find- yes i have replaced the HG on my 1.8 with the new type gasket, but since this (some 10000 miles ago) i have had relatively trouble free motoring. further to this the vehicle has to work hard towing a horse trailer in some testing conditions on a regular basis, and always copes very well. maybe im just one of the lucky ones, but i dont regret buying my Freelander thus far. What i find hard to accept is tha so called fellow Land Rover enthusiasts feel it is ok to give the vehicle names, such as Gaylander. my "freelander" is far from gay, and copes with the dirt and hoss muck with the best of them.

Whoopeee fooking dooo. My Disco did 190,000 miles without blowing it's head gasket.

Dya think Scimitar owners are proud of the Robin Reliant???

Hi, not gonna get drawn into the merits of Freelander versus Disco, nor am i gonna scream n shout, its obvious that i would be wasting my time. just wanted to make the point that they aint all bad uns. to the guy who got 190k without any problems with his disco;- is that rare or are they really that good?

just as a matter of interest guys, is it Freelanders in general you are not liking. (Every model or fuel type)

its not a q of liking or disliking - the petrol hippoos have a horrendous record of major, expensive, repetative problems. We speak from experience.

sure there are a few lucky peeps - but the general advice is "dont risk a petrol Freelander"

I mentioned to a friend who works at Landy a couple of weeks ago that i was looking to buy a Freelander.. His advice was buy a td4 or dont buy one. So thats what i did and love it. Got the steptronic box - wonderful bit of kit.
