hi i have a diesel freelander t reg the problems i have are irratic tickover [surges up & down] smokes on acceleration , doesn,t feel like the turbo is working so is there a test i can do to check the turbo & i have heard that a common trick is to disconect the propshaft to disengage perminant 4 wheel drive & gain extra mpg as this is only driven on roads so any help advice appreciated thanks

Firstly I suggest you use the search facility on this site. You'll learn lots.

Removing the prpo shaft puts the car in 'Mondo' mode so search for that.

Your running problems sound like either the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) is faulty or a split turbo hose. Have a search for these also.

Best of luck.

well it hasn,t been started for a week and tried this morning and it was a pig,had to crank it over a good few times for it to finally start but i had to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep it running and then it filled the yard with smoke so any ideas anyone ?

Get it on a diagnostic otherwise you're going to be chasing your own ar*e all over the place! If the VCU is OK (loads of info on here on how to test it) leave that alone till you get sorted. The excess smoke was probably caused as it was fuelling all the time you were cranking - especially if you had you're foot hard down while cranking so could be yet another diversion to what the true problem is.
