Hi Guys. I have a Freelander 2 Auto. Engine cut out. Was recovered home and engine wouldn’t start. RAC home-start came whilst I was out. Apparently he spent 30 seconds under the bonnet and said Cam-belt in my opinion, and then left.
When i try to start the engine, the serpentine belt and cam-belt both rotate, albeit slowly. They have both done multiple revolutions. There is a high pitch noise, from what I assume is the stater motor. This is the only noise I can hear, there is no turnover noise ( the noise the engine makes before it fires), apologies for the poor noise description!
Battery went flat after a few attempts to start but was recharged and now I’m back to just the high-pitched noise. No codes present on my diagnostic scanner. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. James.

Video link below. Tried to show both belts moving freely but now I’ve reviewed it I’m not so sure the sound is from the starter or not?
A little out of my depth here. Car is too good to scrap though :)

The squeal you can here is from the throttle body. It's very possible the gears have stripped (common) and the butterfly is closed. There's also no compression, which again suggests the throttle butterfly is in the closed position.
Hopefully that's all it is, and the timing belt hasn't jumped, which again will give no compression, but I think you're safe here.

Thanks Nodge. I really appreciate your time and input. If the timing belt has jumped, is at potentially as bad as snapping? Ie bent valves etc? Thank You. Literally had the car for 2 weeks and paid £2.5k on a private sale, sold as seen 😩

Unfortunately if the timing belt has jumped, then some of the valves will be bent, and possibly some rockers too.

Hopefully it's the throttle body, and not a head job.
It's a long old job doing a head job on these engines, as there's mountains of stuff to remove. I know I've done it twice, and I'm now suffering from what I believe is head gasket issues, so I'm about to do mine for a 3rd time.

Apologies. I forgot to update you. It was the timing belt. Teeth had stripped and the belt had jumped several teeth. Car is back on the road now but not under my ownership. The guy repairing it bought the car 👍
