FL1 TD4 Auto - Transmission whine after cold start - SOLVED

This afternoon a great Sage assisted me with this ongoing auto box issue. My suspiscions were that fluid levels may be playing a part in the whine that is occuring. We discovered that the box was overfilled by approx 1L. Hurrah I thought. All will be well! Sadly though, after the level was corrected the whine is now ever present under acceleration/load. I think as a result of today we've narrowed down the problem to the auto box, and probably not the IRD (although both are obviously high mileage) but further investigation is needed, and probably by an autobox specialist. The excess fluid (replaced in february) did appear to have some contaminant/burnt element to it but can't be sure.

I have finally got to the bottom of this one. A combination of the garage that originally did the autobox change and actually underfilled the box, rather than over filling it, and me subsequently following the incorrect procedure for checking the fluid level resulted in the box being about 2lts short of fluid. Having ensured the box is topped up correctly I've now got a completely smooth and quiet Jatco.

Following this post is what sorted it

Good news ! Saves a load of work.

Would be interested to know what part of the procedure went wrong as it would help us not make that same mistake!!

Glad it's sorted.
The fluid check MUST be done with the engine running and the box suitably warmed up. Doing a level check with the engine off will result in an amount of the required fluid draining out.
