Hi all basically i have been offered one of these on a 55 plate i know little about these but remember the horrer stories of headgaskets etc.. on the petrol i think honest opinions on the model would be gratefully took on board as i have told him i will let him know asap hense trying to find out as much as poss

The best thing for you to do is to search this site on TD4 problems. You are right that the petrol models were plagued with problems. Most won't touch them but that doesn't mean they are bad cars when the engine is working correctly. The TD4 does have its own range of issues, but not generally as serious as the petrol models end up with. Have a look at the fault poll at the top of the Feelander section for a bit more information.

Ask yourself this queston. If you're handy with a spanner then you'll find the Freelander fun. If every issue on your car is a visit to the garage you might want to think again.

When they are working well - they are pretty good - its the likelyhood of them working well for any considerable time that is open to doubt.

If yu like the freelander - ALWAYS go for the TD4 (or an XEDi if yu want an old one).

if yu buy one, go for the longest MOST COMPREHENSIVE warranty you can get - if it doesnt have a warranty, and you arent good with spanners - walk away.

Hi it will be classed with no warranty but service history 12mths mot can you take out a seperate warranty and are they really unreliable and costly compared to say................................ vauxhall astra(eg)

not to handy to be honest just want reliability and low maintenance

You'll get reliability from generous maintenance so unless your rolling in it you'll need to be handy.

So maybe they're not for you...

ok thankyou my previous car have been generally reasonable to keep, servicing, parts etc....just been offered this for what i think is a good price hence all the questions

Generous maintenance does NOT give you reliability - yu ask Trewy, Widget et al.

Unless yu consider throwing money at a motor "maintenance".

I'd say the Landy is not the machine for you.

They need looking after and will regularly require something fixing or adjusting. If your handy with the spanner then thats great, but as this isn't your strenght then you will find you will be shelling out stack loads of cash at the garage.

Of course the choice is yours but as you will find mentioned regularly on this site, 'Go into it with your eyes open'.

Hey thanks for your honesty i guess even though the car is cheap it will still cost me a bit in the long/short term bugger as i quite like the look of them with the new front and that lol

dont get me wrong - if yu get a good one, then they are nice little motors, but it is a risk - its your money.

If yu want something that is "comfy" look at a Discovery at about the same price.

I'm not handy with mine, I get it serviced once a year and wash it. I do check things like oil and water. But touch wood
It has never failed me yet.

Discoverys get a worse review than a td4 basically its a 3 door td4 05 plate 53,000 miles £4900???what do you think

Remember the old adage about puppies?

"A puppy is for life, not just for Christmas".

Same with Landrovers but some different words.

"A LandRover is for bankruptcy, not just for poverty"

You have been given great advice.
Why not keep a reliable cheap to run little car going, and buy an old Landy to play with and learn on? Best of both worlds that way.

Later you dump the car and go for gold!
