over the christmas period it appears someone has nicked the plastic cover to the wing mirror on the passenger side of my 1999 freelander. although it annoyed me i wasnt over bothered as i thought it would be easy to replace being just a piece of plastic however now i see why someone stole mine as it appears you cant just buy the plastic bit but need to buy the whole mirror for 60 or 70 quid.

does anyone know where i can just buy the plastic cover ?

Thanks

Craig

You cant unless you keep a look out on ebay or at your local scrap yard. Same has happened to me and i cant find any anywhere (Ebay seem to sell whole units only)

when you eventually refit them, seal all the way round with silicone sealant. you know it's silicone and will come off eventually, but a would be thief may give up thinking it's glued.

SOME FECKERS KNICKED MY PASSENGER SIDE COVER TODAY!!!!

I'd fookin kick shout outta whoevers done it if i could find out who.

I might upgrade to the folding type tho.

That's the third fooking time. First time i'd only just passed my test and clipped something while getting used to driving the car and the person behind me ran over the cover. Second time a fooking bus ripped it off while my freeby was parked up and drove over the cover. Third time i come to my girl to drive to maccy d's and the fookin covers nowhere to be seen and i certainly haven't hit anything in months!

Hi

Sorry I realise this is an old thread, folding mirror type??? is there a link?

Thanks

Later Hippos were supplied with folding mirrors rather than the somewhat less flexible ones on the FL1. It is possible to swap the older ones with newer ones - see http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f38/freelander-everything-you-need-know-46437.html

The older mirrors are a royal pain as LR only supply them as a complete unit, yet frequently it's only the plastic backs that get broken - which is why they get nicked.

This is what i plan to do to my 2000 year freeby, it's only a case of drilling a couple of extra holes i believe. Just got to source the folding type now.

if you look at any Freelander from 2000 on you will see that they have folding mirrors and the ES and HSE models have automatic powerfold mirrors.

Try eBay or online parts sites.

It is just one hole to be drilled each side.

PS if you do a search on this site for "freelander mirror" then you will find the part numbers and drill size required.

hi all, is there a trend of mirror back thefts mines been stolen over new year? Any further news on the thread since last year?
thanks ads

if you buy the electric folding type I can tell you how to wire them for a few pounds without paying hundreds for the wiring harnes plus ecu's ect hope this helps

Just found this thread. Didn't realise having no mirror backs was so common. The feelander I'm buying has electric mirrors both of which have no backs but covered in gaffa tape so it would seem that is a common problem?
