Hi all ,thanks for letting me join the forum .My freelander lost power and stopped with the engine light coming on ,got towed home ,replaced the breather filter ,and the crankcase filter ,cleaned out the egr valve, checked hoses for splits etc and tried out .The car drove perfectly for 5 miles and then a repeat happened ,loss of powere, engine light come on I stopped ,waited 5 mins tried again ,drove fine for about 300m then same thing happened again. Before I take to garage does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be .

Have you checked any engine sensors? particularly the fuel rail sensor. The rail sensor is known to suffer corrosion, which can give a whole range of strange faults, including cutting out.

Hi replaced that sensor about a year ago ,we’ve had it on the local garage diagnostics ,all clear ,garage took for a run no problem, took it out straight after drove for a mile engine cut out ,signs of oil squirts under bonnet ,will try to isolate where they came from .

Oil squirting is it near the top left where the cam sensor is, if so was the little engine cover on at the time of testing, if not sometimes if someone as tightened up the engine cover bolt to tight in that area it can piece the cam cover over the cam chain part and will spurt oil out when running, if the cover is fitted it should not.

Try unplugging the MAF sensor to see how it drives, if it drives ok then look to the MAF sensor that can fail and make you lose power and throw up the EML.

Thanks for the reply not the maf sensor ,have checked the cam cover ...

There is a little whirring ,I haven’t replaced it yet any suggestions of a good one obviously don’t want to spend loads as it might not be the problem

Update
hi all I am having problems with my td4 .A couple of months ago I suddenly lost power ,splurged black smoke and managed to limp to a safe place ,engine management light came on .I had to be rescued but recovery didn’t bring diagnostics .SO replaced the crankcase breather filter ,cleaned out the egr checked it was working ,etc it started fine took it for a spin ran for 4 miles no problem ,then lost power stopped ,no engine management light on .This happened two or three times ,let it rest for an hour starts no problem then fails after about 4 miles.
Took it to the garage ,they managed to make the fault happen whilst driving on the 5 th attempt whilst plugged in to diagnostics ,no code they are scratching their heads to .
I had the vehicle back ,changed the fuel filter I was about to change the low pressure fuel pump ....i’m All out of ideas any help would be appreciated cheers

If it's got loads of black smoke and no power, then that could be the EGR valve is sticking in the open position. Try temporarily blocking the EGR vacuum pipe, to see what affect that has.

Thanks for the reply how would I temporarily block it ?
With anything that fits in the vacuum pipe tight enough to seal it, like a nail for instance. It's only a temporary measure, to stop the vacuum reserve depleting when the ECU triggers the EGR to be active.

Ok so we have changed the fuel filter and low pressure fuel pump ,no change to the problem .The vehicle starts fine no problem at all runs for 3 miles ,chucks out lots of black smoke from the exhaust when excelerating,a knocking sound can happen in the engine loss of power and stop .No restart until I left for 40 mins ,then a repeat of the problems ,any ideas would be greatly appreciated .
