Right I used me pressure bleeder forgot son had used it there fore fluid every where re adjusted all worked well I have 1 question how much fluid should be left in the master with funny lid as it does not leave a lot of room

About 10mm from the top. It needs enough fluid to work, but also an air space above the fluid to prevent fluid being ejected from the vent hole.

Thanks Nodge I intend to get some more fluid to put another litre through to see if Anymore air is in the system The old master cylinder fluid was Black but the fluid coming through is the right colour but slightly misty

Be aware it is not unusual for the Master cylinder to fail after being worked with. It happened to me so I bought an aftermarket master and regretted it, they can leave your peddle bite point on the floor.
Just something to bare in mind if it feels like it's not bled properly.

If you can't get it sorted keep in mind that annoyingly Freelander 1 was a sealed system (even though the lid comes off!) and was just designed to be replaced as a full master and slave and pipework when it needs a change. Dead straight forward, it comes as one unit and literally clips in - just make sure the clutch pedal doesn't boff you in the nose when you unclip it :O

Only for the K1.8 and L series. The TD4 has a separate master and slave.

I bought a LUK Master cylinder If you pump peddle a bit Then its fine but then fades was hoping to do another bleed today but weather will be against me I think. Would you have a realistic idea as to the cost of a clutch and slave cylinder replacement at all?

Without dual mass flywheel you are looking as cylinder and clutch kit, about £150 and then 5 hours at the garage rate.

So 5 hours at 50 is 250 plus clutch, say 400 to 450 and you are about right.

The dual mass flywheel is the bit that stops a diesel engine shaking violently !! Usually good for 150k miles but garage may find it defective. Some do and it is ok of course !!

SO Im on 165000 miles would it be wise to add one to the job if I have to do clutch etc?

Depends if it has been changed before and on the condition, hard to check but a good garage should be able to feel for play and advise.

WELL Bled again with easy bleed 1 litre of fluid fluid in collection jar clear as a bell went into gear a couple of times then pedal sank to the floor, so we (wife an I) have to decide whats to do The mot is in October it passed last year with these advisories "monitor and repair if nescessary reverse lamps (not working) off side wiper blade split at ends off side front (brake disc back plate coroded and loose) (eml light on dash on?) I was wondering if it was a "kosher" mot the year befor it also had something like too much smoke for a turbo diesel. Anyway of confirming mot is a good one? the garage on the mot does exist. So we have to decide to do the clutch and hope for a reasonable outcome on the mot or cut our loses It drives well body good anyone got any sensible comments to help in the outcome?

Any fluid dripping from bell housing?
The TD4 clutch does seem to do this and it always seems to be the slave cylinder that fails. I had one that didn't leak fluid but kept letting air in - no idea how that is even possible??

If a survey of vehicle shows worthwhile, get the clutch done or do it yourself - well covered on this forum.

Not sure if you would take the work on yourself? Most cost effective way.

Thanks as alway for your feedback Andy much appreciated Iam an ex mechanic/ garage manager but I hve a disc prolapse at lumbar 4/5 so not something I can now do. I can pick up a clutch by Borg and beck with the slave cylinder for £139 aprox from a LR parts in yorkshire, The garage I use for what I term The ****e jobs usually do me a good price just waiting on them to get back to me with a price. The wife suggests pick of the little jobs apparently Reverse lights do not count as such before 2009 So its rear fog lights to do I will do the reverse lights also clean of the engine bay as much as possible, I wonder how it is possible to get all that mud/ muck in the engine bay? do basic other checks also oil filter oil air filter and if I get chance the fuel filter. still wonder how they got past smoke problem a couple of years back for mot?

Ok. Just a heads up for the garage. The gearbox input seal often fails and is only available complete with the tube that the slave slides onto. From memory it is about £70 if required. I know it is more expense but compared to the labour, get it checked while they are in there. It usually reveals as a big oily mess in the clutch housing and so is obvious. It may be possible to buy a seal and fit it if the old one is measured. Something I mean to do but not done yet !!
