Noticed an orrible rattle from under me bonnet this avo.
Popped the bonnet to find that the alteenatuur were waving around in the breeze, held on only by the top bolt on the slidy arm.
The rear bottom bolt was missing? The front bottom bolt had sheared off dead flush with the timing case.

How the fook do I git a drill in there to git that bastid out?:mad: :mad: :mad:
 
Coz it's got no load on it it won't be done up tight (unless it's corroded or had thread locker) so it might be possible to glue or solder summat to the flush edge and unscrew it by hand - might be worth bashing with a hammer to make sure it's loose though?
 
You could try sticking a welding rod to it and build up enough metal to get a grip on. It does not have to be pretty - just well stuck.
Be careful not to weld the timing case or build up too much heat.
Quick bursts at high current should do the trick. Let it cool down between welds.
Hopefully it wont be too tight to turn.
I've used this technique several times to remove flush sheared bolts and studs from all sorts of awkward places.

Failing that you may have to remove things in order to get a drill in there and use a stud extractor.
 
hmmm...i like this kinda challenge!!! Could you cut a groove in the sheared face and get a screwdriver to it? - bearing in mind the screw should be relatively mild, you might even get in there with something like a dremel to cut a groove in it.
 
good idea.
i got an air-powered dremmel type thingy. I'll try cutting a groove with that.
it should come out easily - it's not long since it was loosened when I replaced the drive belt.

cut a slot in the end wiv me dremmel type tool and used a screwdriver.
came out piece o ****.

i try to be in the habit of cleaning and copper greasing every bolt that i remove.
In the case of the alteenaytur, the belt had snapped and I had to do a quick repair in the rain at the roadside. so i'd only loosened the bolts, not removed them, so no copper grease.
with hindsight, it seems i'd overtightened one bolt and not tightened another - hence the latest problem!
